Recurring gripe: people on the left have social media and generative AI exactly backwards. Gen AI is the printing press: it cannot and will not be uninvented. It can run on a laptop at this point. Social media is a handful of specific companies with specific first mover and network effects.

unironically chuck schumer could get more of his political agenda done by secretly agreeing with a presidential contender to let them bully him as part of their campaign platform

Also, noting that this set is intentionally NOT billed as a "Vol. 1," BFI folks said on FB that this must sell out, "and not years from now," if they're going to do another set. OrbitDVD has it in stock if you're in the US (and it's only $40 for a 5 film/3 disc set w/ bound bookletโ€”which is crazy).

california governors are obligated by law to proclaim that day ronald reagan day every year and that proclamation made sure to have a dig at republicans in it. im aware your telephone wants you to think he's republican though.

The left is missing out on AI As a movement, it has largely refused to engage seriously with AI, ceding debate about a threat and opportunity to the right

I think this is directionally correct and honestly I'm less concerned about what it means for the left's take on AI than I am for the left's ability to metabolize new information and changing circumstances generally www.transformernews.ai/p/the-left-i...

The state of U.S.-Canada relations aside (clearly the driving factor here), it is pretty abhorrent to see an otherwise liberal democratic leader flirting this hard with China, especially just days after they threw Jimmy Lai in prison.

A throughline for so much of the American political commentariat, from left to right, is the utter and total incomprehension that American actions have consequences.

Along with the everything the vast majority of the audience here is not the politician and it is a moral error to treat them as if they are stand ins for the politician as opposed to a fellow resident of the country asking for due care.

If you want to understand why rich guys are turning back to eugenics and recreating the rhetoric and theology of slavery, itโ€™s because they know on some level this level of wealth inequality is unjustifiable bsky.app/profile/marl...

where im at there's mostly neither. FD influence is statutory -- density, materials, egress, road width, lane width, opposition to traffic calming & trees & bollards, clear zones, outrigger clear zones, etc etc etc. PDs tend to like urbanism when it's not their commute tbh

16.02.2026 23:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

nah but it doesn't hurt, anything that raises usage is good

my only concern is that it's important to have a professional lobby supporting bike infrastructure

16.02.2026 22:29 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

not that this is the point of the convo but no way. FDs are the most involved official stakeholders at like every single step of urban planning

16.02.2026 22:28 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

agreed. but then you start having to fight the firefighting lobby and shit. and also you don't get free money from pathetic motorists.

that's being effective and a mechanism through which the empirically demonstrated safety benefits arise

also it's a good thing when they're installed in poorer communities. yes it sucks that rich criminals are better at lobbying than poor criminals, but in this specific case at the end of the day the people losing out are the rich victims.

I said 21-24, January 6 was the start of this complacency and it was overwhelmingly the admin's and media's complacency.

16.02.2026 17:29 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

That's what everyone thought about Trump from 21-24 and it's what fucked us. Never underestimate the stupidity of americans and the media. Their identity and businesses are premised on false equivalency between the parties that makes ANY major party candidate able to win.

16.02.2026 17:21 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

You can acknowledge these things without 1) asserting the liberal governor of California is a Republican, 2) Implying that leaving the GOP in the wilderness for 4 years without leadership is nothing

16.02.2026 17:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Right, that's more or less my concern, however, Newsom has a very big chance of losing a general, and a likely contributing factor would be from suppressed liberal turnout because of the media environment being particularly critical of him.

16.02.2026 17:18 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

You understand why you're using the language you're using and it's not cute and it's not true. You can just say true things. Newsom is a mediocre governor of California that is betraying Californians and Democrats with triangulation. He's not unelectable and he's not particularly centrist.

16.02.2026 17:11 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

You should speak truthfully as to the risks he would pose as leader of the party and country, without holding him up as a pied piper that crowds out other candidates, and without deliberately constructing a permission structure for low info voters to be shamed into not casting a ballot in nov 28

16.02.2026 17:02 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Not my problem that you're in a stupid affected echo chamber.
