#TenMinMerlin from the UC Davis Arboretum this afternoon. Because if one chooses to go into the lab on a beautiful spring Saturday, making the most of a break helps. The mockingbird made the kestrel call!
My #TenMinMerlin this morning in Yolo County, CA, included a Nuttall’s Woodpecker clearly calling, then a lot of drumming that the app calls a Downy. Maybe I will try to get a look this weekend. I am unsure of the sapsucker ID and sure of the flicker.
It was nice to pick up Orange-crowned Warbler and Cedar Waxwing for #TenMinMerlin this morning in Yolo County, CA.
#TenMinMerlin this morning in Yolo County, CA. Acorn Woodpecker would be nice, but I have never seen them at my place and I think a mockingbird call fooled Merlin. Downy and Nuttall’s are both likely, but I think it may be only a Downy drumming on the recording.

The blasting north wind has abated and more species were detected on my #TenMinMerlin this morning in Yolo County, CA. Still picking up year-round residents and winter birds that haven’t left yet.

I’ve been visiting Point Reyes almost my entire life. On the one hand, the dairies were always a part of that landscape. Some are birding hotspots know by the family’s name. On the other, I am excited to see a wilder version of the landscape take shape.

Western Dog Tick, Dermacentor similis, picked up on a hike to Sunshine Beach in Point Reyes and ID’ed with the help of iNaturalist. I was admiring the pattern on its back, though wasn’t thrilled to find it on my bootlace.
Estero trail to Sunshine Beach in Point Reyes National Seashore, on my July 4th hike this year. I read on the NPS website that Sunset Beach and Sunshine Beach are named for subdivisions a former owner of the Home Ranch wanted to build. Now almost all of the remaining ranches are closing.
