The National Theatre's production of The Importance of Being Earnest starring Ncuti Gatwa is currently airing free on YouTube, if anyone's interested: www.youtube.com/watch?v=obX-...
these are really cute!
it's fascinating though because it didn't seem to have occurred to them that it might be worth giving baihe a go
there was one recent post in the danmei subreddit where someone wasn't enjoying the main couple in qiang jin jiu but was ready to persist in reading it for the f/f side couple (think they got dissuaded when told that there was very little actual content for the side couple)
this reminds me of the time i realised i could get into mpreg if the couple was an f/m couple
they mostly publish quite literary titles, so i believe it's pretty well-received. very striking when you have a whole display of them in a bookshop as well. i suspect fitzcarraldo did a lot to blaze a trail for literary titles in quite minimalist covers as well: www.foyles.co.uk/independent-...
yes there's some light embossing (not hugely visible but you can feel it)
how can such an ordinary sentence made up of ordinary words cause so much pain HOW
here's a write-up of their design decision: www.andotherstories.org/2023/08/16/a...
it's the house style for that particular publisher that they adopted in 2023! it's really pleasant to hold as well, the cover is a really nice cardstock. i'll probably end up reading from it instead of the us edition
she also got me with this ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
Baihe book mail and book non-mail (because I picked up a couple of these at a local independent bookshop): Taiwan Travelogue by Yang Shuangzi, Taiwanese, Japanese, US and UK editions
ning yuan is always getting me (read: gutting me) with lines like these ๐ญ
family and friends in sea are worried about energy shocks and shortages, especially in singapore where they're very dependent on lng from the middle east :( worrying times all round
Hi #EarlyModern Bluesky - did you know that someone brilliant has built working printing presses using Lego and they are trying to get enough supporters so that Lego will release it as a kit?
They look so cool!

Worked on this collaboration with @hanlinacademic.bsky.social & @sleepyneedle.bsky.social to make a mock-cover for their translation of the danmei ่ฟฝๅฃฐไธๅพช้ , (Trace of Our Harmonies). I painted with their input and insightful knowledge of form and music ๐ฅฐโค๏ธโ๐ฅ

generally i agree, but in this particular instance i'm not sure there's any point to pirating ai-generated slop
I genuinely just don't know what more these people want. We're in an age where non-Ghibli anime films can be box office juggernauts and physical manga routinely does circles around Marvel and DC, all while paying pennies on the dollar for good translation talent. They're cultural rent-seekers, dude.
Anyway, pay your manga translators (and everybody else involved) a living wage and give them royalties, for fuck's sake. You're bigger than ever and can afford rates many times bigger than the 90s on the bestsellers topping the fucking NYT charts. Embarrassing you refuse to take care of your own.
If translation *alone* took six months, the pay rate would be so huge, it'd eclipse the golden years of the 90s and every manga translator I know wouldn't be juggling 10+ series. But no, it's one of the quickest, cheapest parts, for worse and for worse. You're drawing blood out of a stone, dinguses.
as always, douqi is gobsmackingly correct. ignore my dire post-midnight chirping and remember that stories have always belonged to people and historically no one can stop the signal; samizdat predates publication; literally anyone can learn to set type and pack an epub. don't let them steal your joy
time to channel the spirit of the stapled k/s zines
(also, maybe it's finally time for me to get serious about learning bookbinding)
three things to hold on to:
1. corporations are not and will never be your friend
2. licences are time-limited
3. fandom, as always, makes its own food
