A Fish Falls From the Sky and Sparks a Brush Fire in British Columbia
Officials say a flying osprey dropped its catch, which then struck power lines, causing sparks that ignited dry grass.
Folks often assume that sheer number of wildfires in West must be linked to intentional arson--despite abundant evidence to contrary. But this partly stems from profound underestimation re: just how easy it can be to spark a fire under right conditions... www.nytimes.com/2025...

California's economy is already getting hit by immigration raids
The number of people reporting to work in the private sector in California has decreased by 3.1% — a downturn only recently matched by the COVID-19 lockdown.
“If it’s true that we are going into a phase in which a lot of these workers are either deported, or scared enough that they won’t go to work, this will be a massive impact,” Giovanni Peri, int'l economics professor at @ucdavisare.bsky.social told @suhauna.bsky.social

USDA Cuts Food Business Centers Supporting Black Farmers
The Regional Food Business Centers distributed more than $600,000 and helped launch 325 new businesses.
This comes after several cuts to grants, financial assistance, and programs by President Trump’s administration. U.S. Rep. Alma Adams (NC) says the administration is “stripping away a lifeline” to agriculture communities as farmers struggle to make ends meet."

In top illustration, a scattered pattern of conventional suburban sprawl. In lower illustration, a cluster development pattern can provide the same total amount of housing as the scattered pattern, but is much safer and more effective because it retains (or creates) a protective
“agricultural-urban interface” near the existing
residential core, with clustered development and a
protective agricultural-urban interface farther away.
To coexist with inevitable wildfires, development guidelines should integrate community location and design, empowering residents of fire-prone regions to survive wildfire, write Max Moritz, wildfire specialist @ucanr.edu et al @cellpress.bsky.social

“When strong northwesterly winds blow parallel to the California coast, they tend to blow [warm] surface water away from the coast,” said @weatherwest.bsky.social @ucanrwater.bsky.social. Cold water rises to the surface to fill the void, contributing to the coastal chill, according to Swain
