Most banned books feature people of color and LGBTQ+ people, report finds Study counteracts claims by conservative lawmakers that books being removed from classrooms are sexually explicit

When librarians fight book bans, the are not just fighting for freedom of expression, but also against hatred and discrimination. #libraries #archives πŸ“š

Whoever decided to release Onyx Storm the day after a holiday when most (if not all) delivery services are closed is, um, not the sharpest. Especially after the disaster release of the last book. πŸ‘€

It's a great day to support your indie bookshop and rely on your friendly neighborhood bookseller to recommend some awesome gifts (because those special orders probably aren't gonna make it!).

Cover of Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, a horror graphic novel with a "cute" bear pulling a bloody bag on the cover.

Over on tiktok we had a viral post about Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees with 1.5 million views that has likely brought in A LOT of sales, but want to guess how many we've sold at OUR indie shop? Just FIVE. In 2 months of it being viral, & with so many commenting about how they just bought it. 😭

A lovely local author posted a video of our shop yesterday and someone commented to take the pride flag down. If you don't like the flag, we're perfectly fine if you don't come in! πŸ‘

If you’re afraid that books might change someone’s thinking, you’re not afraid of books, you’re afraid of thinking.

Next time you have an idea that seems too crazy, just remember that John Woo once walked into an office and said "I wanna make a movie where Nick Cage plays John Travolta playing Nick Cage, and John Travolta plays Nick Cage playing John Travolta," and someone wrote him a check for 80 million dollars

One of the things I think people don't understand is that you only need 2% of people to be actively committed anti trans people to wildly outnumber, outpace and out power 1% who are trans if the other 97% are ambivalent.

Ambivalence about human rights is a problem.

Back cover. It shows illustrated panels of student protesters and summarizes the book plot with the following text:

"It's 1983 during South Korea's Fifth Republic, military regime that has entrenched its power through censorship, torture, and the murder of protesters. In this charged political climate, a freshman named Kim Hyun Sook seeks refuge in the comfort of books. When the handsome young editor of the school newspaper invites her to his reading group, she expects about Moby Dick, Hamlet, and The Scarlet Letter. Instead, she finds herself hiding in basement as the youngest member of an underground banned book club. And as Hyun Sook soon discovers, in a totalitarian regime, the delights of discovering great works of illicit literature are quickly overshadowed by fear and violence.

In BANNED BOOK CLUB, Hyun Sook shares her dramatic true story of political strife, fear mongering, the death of democratic institutions, and the relentless rebellion of reading."

So I have been promoting this like crazy to friends but by coincidence this weekend I read Banned Book Club by @ryanestrada.com and it gave me some great context around the history of Korean democracy that was helpful in understanding the broader implications of what happened yesterday. πŸ“šπŸ‘€ #booksky

Here's your daily reminder that bookstores keep the love of reading alive β€”Β but they also keep neighborhoods beautiful. They are places to gather, to celebrate stories, to find community.

Please do your holiday shopping at your local independent bookstore, if you are lucky enough to still have one.

Speaking of books with lesbians in them, Private Rites released today! If you want a very queer King Lear retelling that doubles as dystopian eco-fiction, this book is for you!

People tend to romanticize dusty bookshops filled almost entirely with old books, and yes, it's still a room full of books, but every time I go to one like that I am thinking about who is missing in all those pages. All the women and BIPOC folks and queer people. I want to hear those voices.

The Supreme Court case tomorrow is fundamentally not about gender affirming care, it's about whether or not trans people have any protections under the 14th amendment. A loss in this case would greenlight a torrent of explicitly discriminatory legislation without much, if any judicial recourse.
