What you’ve done here is helpful.

I attempted this a while back, mostly with artists who worked on Hellboy & BPRD comics. Some styles are easier to riff on than others. I think most of these are interesting failures.

Started building the third iteration of the kaiju model I plan to use as reference for the next volume of Stomped.

Shout out to my buddy Kevin for doing most of the actual construction. I’m impressed that this thing actually supports its own standing weight!

Haven’t been posting much art lately, so here’s me trying to figure out how a striped hoodie works. Used reference photos but decided on limiting to fewer stripes so it reads better when she tiny on the page. Kim from my indie kaiju comic Stomped.

Star Bar and the Portland Insectarium host a monthly Drink & Draw with a bunch of live and mounted bugs. Haven’t drawn with colored pencils in a while, so it was fun practice.

Been going down a rabbit hole of watching some of the earliest surviving motion pictures, from around 1880-1920. Looked up “oldest films” lists on Letterboxd and most of them included movies up to the 60s… the 80s… one even defined “old” as anything made up to 1999. 💀

Unfortunately no level of awareness can protect one from professional hypnotism.

A Garden of Spheres (which I’m taking my time with and almost done reading) and Stages of Rot are two of the most beautiful comics I’ve read. I show your work to any of my nature loving friends I think would be into comics if they only knew it wasn’t all superhero stuff.

My cousin paints Warhammer figures and he used a pulled apart cotton ball to dab marble textures. It was pretty convincing.

I know, I’m frustrated too. Hopefully soon now that the holiday rush is over? I keep checking in and getting the same response “the fulfillment center is way behind”.

I think episodic TV shows and film franchises wrestle with similar issues. When creators working in one form of media predominantly look to other media to figure out the “formula” for how to tell a story, they usually do so at the expense of exploring what makes their chosen medium special.

I’ll have to hunt this one down, I’ve been trying to collect all your Man-Thing issues, didn’t know about this one.

A good example of how useful photo reference can be to level up your art. On the left is my initial freehand doodle. Couldn’t find one image in a pose I liked, so I used elements from three.

Could I have gotten there without ref? Maybe sort of, through hours of trail and error. It’s a tricky angle.
