The dread caught in his chest, heart thundering against his ribs like the wings of a dove. “Bless me Father, for I have sinned.” With a swipe of his hand over his mouth to rid it of the vampire’s accursed saliva, he tried to find the words he’d spoken hundreds of times before already. They failed him, every word stumbling in his mind rather than offering him reprieve of consistency. The vampire—Vander was his name—let his tongue drag over the shine of Silco’s spit that still clung to it, and Silco stifled the ever-present heat that was rising in his body with a deep breath. Finally, with air in his lungs, he remembered his words. “How long has it been since your last confession?”
