I wouldn't normally share a video like this from an unofficial site, but it was such a perfect use for the song, and the message still stands.
I must admit I'm feeling a little seen by some of the marketing Don'ts, mainly because I'm a bit rubbish at social media in general and still haven't got into my bluesky groove.
#pretendpanel
I can tolerate most marketing tricks, although some won't actually convince me to buy anything.
The one thing I do hate, is that subset of authors who, the minute you follow them, slide into your DMs like 'Oh hi. I see you can read. Read my book!'
No. Get in the bin.
I got printed proofs of my two cover concepts so I can test them out with actual people at Carlisle Comic Con in a couple of weeks.
The map looks a bit washed out in the flesh, and the alien face is too big, but those can be fixed if the concept works.

What if you were the only human *not* to get turned into a bear? What if all the bears were turned into humans too?
*opens a fresh notebook*

For me, a bonkers premise will sell a book. Eurovision Song Contest in space? Yes please! The moon suddenly turns into cheese for no obvious reason? Oh heck yes!
So I guess in marketing terms it's the elevator pitch, followed by the blurb if I'm only half way there.

Sharing the cover concepts for my next (bear-free) novel, The Rothwell Incident. All thoughts, comments, and preferences welcomed.
#SFFChat Q4:
Here's the word bear in T.Rex's origin story, from Bit#1 of The Ambivalence Chronicles.
I have no actual bears in any stories so far. Maybe next time?
#SFFChat Q3:
Lobsang from the Long Earth series comes to mind, partly for being a Tibetan genius turned AI, but mostly because he struck me as being somewhat manipulative towards Joshua.
I don't think we had those; Now! and the Hits Album/Tape/CD were the big compilations of my youth.
#SFFChat Q2:
Create them with something I can relate to, even something trivial like which is the best Cola or sharing the same first NOW... album.
That at least gives me a way into their character or a way to imagine a conversation with them.
#SFFChat Q1
One thing I do find when I'm writing is that switching perspective, even just for a single chapter or scene, can give me a fresh outlook on the story and release writer's block.
Sometimes it even stays in the final edit!
#SFFChat intro
Hi, I'm Steve, scifi and GameLit author, usually in the wrong time zone/reality for this game.
If I turned into a polar bear I'd be getting some Iorek Byrnison cosplay before the next comic con. Also drinking Coke, but I do that anyway.

No shimmying but I do have a knight in a dance off against a fairy, so there's that.

Seamless link from poodle to St Bernard, which was mentioned by the Pet Shop Boys yesterday.
Yes, that's why it's a controversial opinion! Human would be my preference, and i certainly won't be doing anything that sounds like those terrible YouTube narrations that seem to be everywhere now.
At this point it's the only affordable way I could create audiobooks, so I certainly intend to look into it.
#ControversialOpinion:
AI narration potentially makes indie books accessible to an audience who can't read regular books.

Ok, so poodle is the only major dog breed not to get a mention in the lyrics, but it gets points for coming from an actual pet shop.
