I’m obsessed!

They darted from stall to stall, Toge searching for the st trinkets. Yuuta was along for the ride, but truthfully only half understood the allure of all the items Toge picked up. Sure they were all cute, but what was the appeal? When he said as much, Toge replied, "trinketeering is serious business. " "Trinketeering... did you just make that up?" Toge glared at him in disappointment and rolled his eyes. "Ugh, you wouldn't get it." Toge shook his head. "You don't know the power of a little guy on your shelf." "Apparently I am misinformed." Yuuta admits. "Clearly." Yuuta cleared his throat. "What if you help me pick one out for my desk? My room is so bland, and it would be a cute thing to remember this night by." Toge's eyes lit up. "Really?" Yuuta laughed at his earnestness, "Yeah, we must find my small guy-" "Little guy," Toge corrected. "-right, a little guy for my desk." Toge wiggled his body excitedly and then turned to scour over the various tiny figurines and plushies. "'ll find the perfect one."

When Toge and the dogs return to the barn after lunch, Okkotsu has finished his meet and greet and Megumi has sent him home to come back the following day. “What do you think of him?” Megumi asks when Toge strolls into the office. Megumi is sitting at the desk looking over a calendar and jotting down notes, but he pauses to watch Toge sign. “He’s haunted.” “Excuse me?” Megumi raises an eyebrow. “He’s been through it. Like me. Like Maki.” Toge shrugs as he signs. “There’s some trauma there. He’s looking for a reason to live.” “You got all that from the 30 seconds you interacted with him,” Megumi deadpans and Toge snickers.

“I’m glad you’re interested in volunteering. We can always use more help around here.” Toge watches Okkotsu’s eyes track his movements before he smiles, raising his hands to sign while he speaks. “Yeah, no problem. Just looking for something new and a way to occupy my time.” Toge can tell there’s more to it. He takes a moment to look him over—he’s experienced enough and worked with enough horses to recognize the shadow of trauma hanging over someone’s shoulders. Not to mention the haunted look in Yuuta’s storm blue eyes, the dark circles indicating nights of sleeplessness, and the messy dark hair that looks like he’s always anxiously running his hands through it. The 3am email makes a lot more sense now.
