The is the federal government telling news stations to provide favorable coverage of the war or their licenses will be pulled.
A truly extraordinary moment.
We aren't on the verge of a totalitarian takeover. WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF IT.
Act like it.
“The American people absolutely should be concerned about...the deterioration of our national security apparatus.” @michael-feinberg.bsky.social reacts as Trump claims to have his eye on Iranian sleeper cells despite not sharing plans to do anything about them.
I have thoughts on the recent joint ventures between the UFC and the FBI, and am thankful to @ms.now for giving me a forum to voice them.
Look, we don’t live in Great Britain. It’s just not acceptable under contemporary sartorial mores.
Everyone is focusing on the quality of Florsheim shoes, but why is no one remarking how obnoxious it is that they’re pairing black oxfords with blue suits?
@annabower.bsky.social wins the internet today.
I wrote this thread seven months ago, and it seems like it’s about time to repost it. Perhaps more effort should be spent safeguarding communities in Michigan and Virginia than on this performative toughness.
One of my favorite performances of all time was Voigt singing the role at Chicago’s Lyric Opera in the late aughts, with sets by David Hockney, to boot. I’m genuinely torn about whether to travel a few hours north to see this one.
Acting is an honorable craft, and it drives empathy in society. But being gifted at it doesn’t mean that the rest of us have to take your opinions on other forms of art seriously.
(I know he did opera and ballet as a kid. I also don’t care. The comments were still idiotic and unnecessary.)
I feel quite confident that the long-term cultural influence of Beethoven and Diaghilev will outlast that of the guy who starred in a middling reboot of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”
On March 10, anniversary of 1959 Lhasa Uprising, Chinese govt would be on high alert, but few Tibetans would dare to mark the occasion as the cost is too high. "World leaders should use this moment to challenge China’s enforced silence surrounding Tibet": www.hrw.org/news/2026/03...
When lawyers are motivated to “get to yes,” their work is prone to bullshit (in the technical sense). @danmaurerlawprof.bsky.social argues that the Maduro Rendition memorandum is full of it.
I continue to be gobsmacked at 1) how common this formulation is 2) how antisemitic and generally bigoted it is 3) and how for all the talk of anti-semitism this is never cited as an example even though it’s quite literally the original incarnation.
FBI agents with experience and training in counterterrorism and/or Iran are:
a.) Being fired for doing their jobs.
b.) Transporting detained immigrants as step-and-fetches for ICE.
Republicans aren't complaining about either of those things.
[Exit Murderer.]
I’ve heard it attributed to Churchill, too, who also never said it.
As for western civilization and its heirs, does anyone think this clown could differentiate between a classical and a romantic motif?Would anyone claim he could define “chiaroscuro?”
You want real evidence for the decline of the Ivy League? Hegseth is it. He is the heir of nothing but mediocrity.
It’s important to note that neither Hegseth nor any of the other imposters play acting at national leadership have the slightest inkling of why Europeans came to this continent in the first place, or the creedal principles they chose to detail in our founding documents.
Nothing will ever top “Breaking the Waves” for me.
It’s a scene from “Antichrist.” It’s his worst film, I think, but that talking fox does make me smile.
Only on Bluesky would this get me judged for not being appreciative enough of single parents. In case the Lars von Trier clip didn’t make this explicit, my tongue is firmly in cheek.
In light of even more firings at the FBI last week, I’m re-posting this clip as a protest at how deep the rot is burrowing.
First full weekend of solo parenting — ever — begins tomorrow.
I’m printing this out to show my friends and family, few of whom would ever testify that I’ve *lowered* their blood pressure.
Don’t worry, Graham, my tongue was firmly in cheek (and great seeing you in person the other week).
I realize I’m the only non-academic commenting, but isn’t that the concept of peer review?
This sounds reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman’s film “The Serpent’s Egg,” so, of course, I’m picking it up.
To get a job as an analyst at the NSA, applicants are now required to identify their favorite executive orders.
Radiohead just randomly started streaming live performances and random songs from their catalogue yesterday, and it's still going.....................
