Portrait of a young man in a grey wig wearing a black cravat white shirt and blue coat.

When it’s over 30°C and you’re trying to remember what it was like… to feel cool.

Samuel Linley here isn’t lost in deep thought—he’s just mentally somewhere with air-con (or the 18th century equivalent...).

🐕 The Dog Show (originally The Sister-in-Law) is Garwood at her sharpest: rich textures, domestic detail, and just a hint of satire. The dogs’ coats alone are a masterclass in wood engraving.

🐊 The Crocodile (once titled The Daughter) shows a neat line of schoolgirls walking along a garden wall — their order gently broken by one girl reaching down to pet a dog. A moment of warmth in the middle of discipline.

🛁 In Two Sisters, a raised viewpoint gives us a curious, almost cinematic look at a bathroom scene. One sister dominates the foreground while the bath stretches upward behind her. Stillness? Tension? You decide.

These wood engravings were created in 1930 for a Curwen Press calendar that was never published — but Garwood used the opportunity to flex her full creative range. 🎨

👀 Sharp eyes, steady hands, and a quietly subversive sense of humour — Tirzah Garwood’s Relations series turns everyday family scenes into miniature masterpieces of observation. 🧵

Wood engraving in black and white of a train carriage compartment with a woman sat on bench on right looking out and three people sat opposite her. Hilly landscape visible through window.

Step into the world of Tirzah Garwood in the first major exhibition dedicated to her work. Known for her 'sophisticated naïve' style, Garwood transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary.
