Some big news for January. I started a new position at @unibirmingham.bsky.social as one of their new 125th Anniversary Chairs. Very excited about this opportunity and look forward to highlighting the work of @edrc-uk.bsky.social in the new role too. Also big thanks @sussex.ac.uk for the past 19yrs.
At EDRC, we welcome the publication of the Warm Homes Plan.
Our latest blog breaks down why it matters: www.edrc.ac.uk/news-blog/wa...
It centres energy demand reduction, with plans for solar, batteries, cleaner heating, better insulation and fairer costs.
This is one of my favourite apps π
We will discuss our latest paper on why language matters in energy policy, published in @natenergy.nature.com, on 23 Sep.
Come and hear from authors @stefanb23.bsky.social @kcedano.bsky.social & Tony Reames, plus special guest @harrimus.bsky.social.
See details on how to register below.

We urge researcher and policymakers to rethink the language they use to describe people having difficulty paying energy bills. The way research & policy talks about these inequities shapes thinking and approaches to energy challenges. 3/4
#energysky ππ‘
Terms like "the fuel poor" have implications about shame and hard work, or the lack of it. The suggestion is - if you worked a bit harder, or managed money more carefully, you'd be able to pay energy bills. But the problems are not the fault of individuals - they are systemic. 2/4

Let's challenge terms like "the energy poor" & call out broken system that causes inequities. New paper in @natenergy.nature.com led by @stefanb23.bsky.social w. @kcedano.bsky.social @lld8.bsky.social Tony Reames & Neil Simcock. 1/4

Energy demand reduction must lead the #NetZero transition, says @martiskainen.bsky.social .The Β£15M EDRC director emphasised reimagining #systems, not just technology. True #sustainability requires bridging #socialsciences with #engineering.

π’ βEnergy efficiency should be our first priority β itβs the cheapest fuel we have.β
EDRC Director @martiskainen.bsky.social joined BBC 5 Live Drive to discuss the Sizewell C nuclear plant & why demand reduction must come first.

New blog post on why we need to consider people at the hear of #netzero transitions. Unlike some say, net zero policies are not doomed. Read more below:
Inspiring @sussexnrggroup.bsky.social keynote lecture by @dharavyas.bsky.social, CEO of Energy UK this evening. UK has done well to stop coal; #renewables are getting cheaper, UK #emissions are going down. Adding renewables will decouple gas & electricity prices, which will help #energybills too.
Thank you @lwhitmarsh.bsky.social & @bath-iscc.bsky.social for hosting me for a visit to learn more about your #climate & #sustainability research, and connections to our @edrc-uk.bsky.social research. A full day of meetings so no photo of campus, but here is a quick pic of Bath anyway!
New blog on key priorities regarding the @thecccuk.bsky.social 7th Carbon Budget
There are a lot of systemic reasons why women are not applying more, not least the internal requirements for PIs in some institutions. Sorry to hear of your experienceπ
New blog post reflecting on an event organised by @iea.org and hosted by @ec.europa.eu last week on widening participation in clean energy. We discussed particularly fairness of energy transitions. #energysky ππ‘
As highlighted by @janrosenow.bsky.social, women remain underrepresented also in energy research leadership. In 2019, 420 female PIs representing 17% of EPSRC projects. For EPSCR grants over Β£10m, ONLY 6% of applications came from women. Needs to change!

Getting to #netzero has many benefits - as outlined in this report led by @studossett.bsky.social
βnet zero is good for the economy, environment and societyβ - and can help reduce poverty

The way we treat those most vulnerable in society shows the kind of society we live in. Many disabled people work (like myself) and many more want to work, but often barriers in society make it difficult. Address those barriers first before cutting vital benefits from disabled people. #pip
2 days of discussions in Brussels on widening participation in #cleanenergy, organised by @iea.org & @ec.europa.eu. Lovely to meet Aggeliki Aggeli & catch up w. @edrc-uk.bsky.social Advisory Board Chair @louisesunderland.bsky.social. Need better language, trust & clarity on benefits of clean energy.
Thank you for the invite to talk, look forward to this!
Our latest newsletter is out, check out latest activity from @edrc-uk.bsky.social below
Thanks for sharing Josh! It was great to see some of the @edrc-uk.bsky.social team in Leeds.
Gillian Tett highlights innovation and policy (& a little sacrifice), in addressing climate crisis. Need the right language & trust, highlighting success stories in climate innovation. Also recognising how people engage with stories & politics. Great keynote at @bennett-innovate.bsky.social launch.
At the official launch of the new @bennett-innovate.bsky.social based at University of Sussex. Todayβs event highlights how we can tackle the #climatecrisis through innovation & policy.
New policy brief now on how to make green choices fair for all. Work led by Christian Calvillo at @edrc-uk.bsky.social
