Happy World Soil Day! Healthy soil stores carbon, protects against erosion, and keeps farms thriving. Combined with climate-smart livestock practices including genetics, feed additives, optimized feed, and methane-inhibiting boluses for cattle, ag can tackle climate change from the ground up. 🌾🐂

At the UC Davis CLEAR Center, PhD student, Sharissa Anderson is leading this early-life intervention study to see how one small bolus can make a big difference. Her work shows that even small changes early in life can have a lasting impact on livestock sustainability.

This slow-release bolus sits in a calf's rumen (first chamber of its stomach) & gradually releases an active ingredient that can potentially impact ruminal environment where methane is formed. By giving this bolus shortly after birth, we can potentially lower an individual animal's methane output.

Our team is exploring innovative ways to make cattle production more sustainable. At the heart of this work is a single bolus introduced early in a calf's life. 💊 🐂

New CLEAR Conversations episode features Troy Rowan, assistant professor at University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. Growing up in cattle-breeding family, Troy tackled tall challenge of using genetics to understand & help reduce livestock emissions.

As a research center with a strong focus on improving sustainability in animal agriculture, we work closely with farmers and the farming sector to identify high-impact strategies to help reduce emissions on the ground, where it matters most. 2/

What are the most effective ways to reduce livestock emissions? According to the Pathways Towards Lower Emissions Report from the FAO, its productivity gains, better breeding and improved animal health. 1/

A Microbial Blueprint for Climate-Smart Cows UC Davis research reveals which gut microbes in a cow could reduce methane, bringing them a step closer to engineering microbes to create climate-smart cows.

What if key to cooling planet lived inside a cow's gut? 🐄

Researchers including Dr. Matthias Hess, a professor at UC Davis, have discovered how red seaweed changes microbial gene activity inside the rumen, a breakthrough that could transform methane reduction. 📉

As a result, carbon emissions have shrunk drastically, so much so that they might reach climate neutrality soon. 4/4

When I returned two years later, not one or two, but all recommendations were implemented: An anaerobic digester, a biomass factory, a modern feed center for all member dairies, and massive solar installations. 3/
