Universities are in a βscramble for studentsβ in a bid to avoid redundancies and course closures due to financial pressures, an expert suggested.
The latest figures from UCAS show the highest ever number of 18 year olds applying to university.
But the gap in application rates between those from the wealthiest and poorest areas has widened this year, from 22 to 23 percentage points.
