My summer project of reading the history of Finnish (military) intelligence approaches its end, so a few things I've learned:
First, Finnish signals intelligence ( #SIGINT) was _very_ good.
During WW2, it was regularly reading not only Soviet codes, but also the diplomatic codes of e.g. the US.
This is 8-year-old Oleh Antonov. russia killed him yesterday near the village of Odnorobivka in the Kharkiv region.
He was returning home with his mother, father, and 4-year-old brother when a russian kamikaze drone struck their car. Oleh died instantly.
OTD in 1992 Russia, Ukraine, Belarus & Kazakhstan signed Lisbon protocol to promise to give their nukes to Russia.
It also recognized *all 4 states* as legal successors to USSR. Thus, Kremlin concedes in law that Ukraine won WW2 just as much as we claim we did.

The great power model assumes a world organised via pragmatic bargaining grounded in realpolitik, and where the mutual capacity to inflict damage constrains expansionist impulses.
Term 2 Trump foreign policy - from tariffs to NATO to soft power to China and Russia - is an epic mess. One reason seems to be that the administration is operating with two conflicting, equally flawed, views of the world and the US's place in it. 🧵

Just one small problem: the policies Trump advocated would only make things worse. They are pre-mercantilist. They are so bad they are not even wrong.
Everyone should read this, especially for the bits in the article that give us some insight into what these detention prisons used by ICE are like.
And no one, no one, should be traveling to the US if they can avoid it. No one.

There are 32m small businesses in the USA
There are 33m companies in the USA. Only 21k employe 500 or more. And they only make up 23% of workers.
Trump and Elon are ignoring the more than 32m entrepreneurs that can't afford to build a new factory or pay tariffs or absorb cancelled contracts.

You don’t negotiate with Russian terrorists who fire missiles with cluster ammunition warheads at playgrounds and killing 9 children, as happened in Krivyi Rih. You send those Russian terrorists straight to hell and break their remaining empire into pieces. Period.
The White House says tariffs on Russia (and presumably these others) are unnecessary because we don't trade with them on account of trade embargoes. 3 points:
1) Not true (see below)
2) Iran and Syria are heavily embargoed, but still got tariffs
3) Trump put tariffs on several uninhabited islands

Belarus
North Korea
Cuba
They apparently took the time to impose tariffs on several uninhabited islands, so the omissions are extra noteworthy. If you spot others please flag!
