Scientists In Australia Just Identified A Previously Unknown Stick Insect โ€” And It Weighs As Much As A Golf Ball "Acrophylla alta" is likely the heaviest insect in Australia.

Your cool creature of the week is this new (to us!) ginormous stick insect that theyโ€™ve just discovered in Australia.

At 15 inches long, itโ€™s more of a branch insect than stick insect, and is now officially Australiaโ€™s heaviest insect! #science

Just got an ad telling me that "seniors born between 1979-1986 may benefit" from such and such, and if this is my kick into hagdom, who am I to argue?

Fellow hags and crones, we'll take over from here. ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ

Yeah! Itโ€™s a really beautiful colour, and also one you canโ€™t really make with others. Great to mix with other natural tones too!

"I need ChatGPT to brainstorm" dear human person the whole point of brainstorming is to find new ways or angles when approaching a problem, the "let's regurgitate the complete stolen corpus of human achievement"-machine doesn't help you brainstorm - it stops you from brainstorming.

Question for parents: what's your KID'S favourite shark?

Asking for, well... me. ๐Ÿฆˆ๐Ÿฆˆ๐Ÿฆˆ๐Ÿฆˆ

(Yes you can answer if you don't have kids, but only if you're uncommonly obsessed with sharks!) ๐Ÿ˜‰

What bubbles up is anger. Yes, scientists are supposed to float above personal biases and politics, Marvel writes. โ€œBut I donโ€™t think that we enhance our credibility by pretending we feel nothing when we are ignored or belittled or insulted. It hardly makes us more honest to lie about our emotions. So here it is: Iโ€™m mad. I am angry at the cynicism, the lies, and the greed. I feel burning rage when I hear the same tired talking points, the falsehoods repeated credulously by people who should (and do) know better. Iโ€™m annoyed at how I and my fellow scientists have been treated. And I am absolutely furious when I see the uncertainty inherent in the scientific method twisted into something evil. Scientists donโ€™t know everything, itโ€™s true. But my God, I want to scream, we donโ€™t know nothing.โ€

Lately, reading the work of intelligent, reasoned, thoughtful, ethical people is a salve to me.

Here are some thoughts from @drkatemarvel.bsky.social's new book 'Human Nature: Nine Ways to Feel About Our Changing Planet', and already know I will be raving about it for awhile.

Tyrannosaurus Rex's Bite Force Measured 8,000 Pounds, Scientists Say "That's like setting three small cars on top of the jaws of a T. rex โ€” that's basically what was pushing down," a researcher says. Humans bite with a measly 200 pounds of force.

Your unhinged animal fact of the day is that scientists have determined how strong T. Rex Bite was -- and it's the equivalent of being crushed by three cars.

That's 431,000 PSI of bite force.

(For context, humans have a bite force of ~200 PSI.)

So yeah. Chomp.

WHOA. So this is cool. Scientists have learned that fig trees can convert CO2 into STONE.

This is good news for a) climate change and b) nerds who enjoy the neat stuff that nature is always up to.

They could solve this by having a single question at the end of the survey: "Please explain any issues you have with the previous questions." That would flush out out. ๐Ÿ˜‰

If it helps, today is the second shortest day in history.

This is because the Earth is expected to complete its rotation approximately 1.34 milliseconds faster today than the average 24 hours.
