A much-liked post by Germany’s satirical newspaper @der-postillon.com with the titles “Vienna Academy of the Arts offers Trump admission as a student” and the caption “They don’t want to get blamed again“

A joke for the history buffs:

I wouldn't call it a test match!

Indeed. It’s a rare thing in park cricket. I played under many captains nicknamed ‘Captain Araldite’.

this is unsustainable, the $600M underspend of the #MRFF could be funnelled, or at least partially funnelled, to supporting excellent #NHMRC applications that fall below the funding cut off because there is too little money in the pot #DiscoveriesNeedDollars #SaveOzScience

A graph plotting the CSIRO funding as a percentage of GDP from 1978 to 2025. In 1980 it was around 0.17 %, since then it has sharply fallen to 0.03 %.

The dismantling of Science in #Australia continues...

I remember that hopes were high in 2022 that the new Labor Government would end the decade-long decline. We are now in the second #Albanese term, and things are worse than ever.

The Greens have secured an inquiry to find out why job & program cuts are being rolled out across the CSIRO! It will consider the impacts of the funding cuts, the importance of public funding for science & CSIRO’s future funding & resourcing needs.

The whole science/research sector is completely cooked. Please broaden the scope of the inquiry if possible.

senior CSIRO execs have bonuses built into their contract? (not the major issue but far out…)

The states are the only level of government that have ever done anything, and they have the corporate knowledge for state capacity. You will never pass a referendum abolishing the states. Abolish local government and make more states if needed. It's right there in the constitution how to.

Save the CSIRO

Our national science & research agency is now facing more job cuts than under Tony Abbott

Call on the Albanese Govt to fund the scientists & research we need to tackle big issues we face from climate to food security and everything in between

None of these tasks are unreasonable on their own. But together, they create a workload that even the most dedicated colleagues struggle to balance. The result? Burnout, stalled research, missed opportunities and a quiet sense that we’re stretching people far beyond what the system was designed for.

CSIRO 350 job cuts a damning indictment on Government priorities, misses 'golden opportunity' on research The announcement this week that CSIRO are to cut 350 research jobs is another damning indictment on Australia’s ongoing failure to prioritise research and development.

‘Sad day for publicly funded science’: up to 350 more jobs to go at the CSIRO Australia’s national scientific agency announces more research job losses as it looks for budgetary savings

We are a stupid country! Led by fools with short term agendas and far too few brain cells. I could cry. ##auspol #science #innovation www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

This is obscene.

The challenges facing the nation means we should be scaling up CSIRO, not cutting it to shreds.

While we are sending billions to the US for nuclear shipyards, our science and industrial base at home is falling apart for lack of funds and direction.

CSIRO to slash hundreds of jobs in cost-saving drive The staff association at the nation’s leading scientific research organisation says the latest round of cuts marks “a sad day for publicly funded science”.

That's more than 1,100 jobs lost at the CSIRO over the last two years.

"Combined, the staff association estimates that equates to cutting the agency’s size by a third."

This is more cuts to the CSIRO than was attempted by the Abbott government.

“CSIRO has announced it will slash up to 350 jobs as the national science agency grapples with long-term financial challenges … with current funding failing to keep pace with the rising costs of running a modern science agency.”

Not “challenges”. They’re choices. 😡

"If we are serious about meeting the huge challenges ahead, from climate change to AI and robotics, the government must invest in the people doing the science."

Thank you, @davidpocock.bsky.social. How this is not obvious to a Labor government just boggles the mind.
