It’s not a perfect adaptation, but the Clark and Lex relationship is easily the best part of the series, and Michael Rosenabum brings a level of complexity and vulnerability to Lex that makes him feel deeply tragic at every turn.

Speaking of Morrison…

Lex is only present in a few issues if All-Star Superman, but he completely steals every scene he’s in. A hilariously campy take on pre-crisis Lex.

Thanks to Morrison, I will always consider Lex drawing on his eyebrows every morning canon, no matter what anyone else says.

More villain protag/villain team up stories!

I’m not a huge fan of Lex’s writing in the 90s, but “JLA: Rock of Ages” is a rare exception, and “Superman: the Black Ring” is an excellent example of how to make Lex compelling without necessarily making him sympathetic.

Salvation Run

Forever Evil

Now for something a little different…

Both Salvation Run and Forever Evil feature more villain-centric stories, featuring Lex going head to head with other villains instead of Superman.

Superman: Up, Up and Away kickstarted a new era for Lex in the 2000s, and most variations on his story since then have used a variation on the Geoff Johns’ take on the character.

Superman: Last Son follows and features more of Johns’ Lex.

Superman: Birthright

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor

For modern comics, Mark Waid’s Superman: Birthright is REQUIRED reading, imo. I would also heavily recommend Waid’s (currently unfinished) follow-up to Birthright, The Last Days of Lex Luthor, which is already one of my absolute favorite books despite only having one issue out at the moment.

For other Bronze Age recs (my personal favorite Lex era), Action Comics #500 and #544 are excellent special issues.

#544 is written in part by Cary Bates, whose other Lex stories from the era I would also highly recommend checking out.

Not comics, but on the subject of Maggin, I’d highly recommend his novels: “Last Son of Krypton”, “Miracle Monday”, and his short story “Luthor’s Gift” are all available for free here: theages.superman.nu/maggin/

He also has a new book called “Lexcorp” on amazon which I haven’t read yet.

I can’t recommend all Elliot S! Maggin’s Lex Luthor stories highly enough and generally consider him to be the gold standard for Lex Luthor, but some of the high notes are Superman #292 and Superman #416.

The Lexor Saga (started in Superman #164 above) is one of Lex’s best pre-crisis ongoing storylines and continues in Superman #168 and Action Comics #318.

Any Silver Age stories by Edmund Hamilton are a great starting place if you want to see Lex’s historical roots.

hello i don’t know how to use this app but i am trying to make myself stop using twitter. i like dc comics, smallville, dragon age, baldur’s gate, the locked tomb, and a whole bunch of other nerd stuff.

from a practical perspective also just. the nature of the DC universe is that it has to parallel our own which means superman can’t change anything too radically, which means that slightly-left-of-center is really the best we’re gonna get.
