SMALLVILLE.
Itβs not a perfect adaptation, but the Clark and Lex relationship is easily the best part of the series, and Michael Rosenabum brings a level of complexity and vulnerability to Lex that makes him feel deeply tragic at every turn.
Action Comics #1050
Superman (2023) #1
And if you want something VERY recent, Iβm personally really enjoying Joshua Williamsonβs take on Lex in Superman (2023).
The story starts in Action Comics #1050, then continues in Superman (2023) #1.
All-Star Superman
Speaking of Morrisonβ¦
Lex is only present in a few issues if All-Star Superman, but he completely steals every scene heβs in. A hilariously campy take on pre-crisis Lex.
Thanks to Morrison, I will always consider Lex drawing on his eyebrows every morning canon, no matter what anyone else says.
JLA: Rock of Ages
Superman: The Black Ring
More villain protag/villain team up stories!
Iβm not a huge fan of Lexβs writing in the 90s, but βJLA: Rock of Agesβ is a rare exception, and βSuperman: the Black Ringβ is an excellent example of how to make Lex compelling without necessarily making him sympathetic.
Salvation Run
Forever Evil
Now for something a little differentβ¦
Both Salvation Run and Forever Evil feature more villain-centric stories, featuring Lex going head to head with other villains instead of Superman.
Superman: Up, Up and Away kickstarted a new era for Lex in the 2000s, and most variations on his story since then have used a variation on the Geoff Johnsβ take on the character.
Superman: Last Son follows and features more of Johnsβ Lex.
Superman: Birthright
Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor
For modern comics, Mark Waidβs Superman: Birthright is REQUIRED reading, imo. I would also heavily recommend Waidβs (currently unfinished) follow-up to Birthright, The Last Days of Lex Luthor, which is already one of my absolute favorite books despite only having one issue out at the moment.

Action Comics #544
For other Bronze Age recs (my personal favorite Lex era), Action Comics #500 and #544 are excellent special issues.
#544 is written in part by Cary Bates, whose other Lex stories from the era I would also highly recommend checking out.
Not comics, but on the subject of Maggin, Iβd highly recommend his novels: βLast Son of Kryptonβ, βMiracle Mondayβ, and his short story βLuthorβs Giftβ are all available for free here: theages.superman.nu/maggin/
He also has a new book called βLexcorpβ on amazon which I havenβt read yet.
Superman #292
Superman #416
I canβt recommend all Elliot S! Magginβs Lex Luthor stories highly enough and generally consider him to be the gold standard for Lex Luthor, but some of the high notes are Superman #292 and Superman #416.

Action Comics #318
The Lexor Saga (started in Superman #164 above) is one of Lexβs best pre-crisis ongoing storylines and continues in Superman #168 and Action Comics #318.

Superman #167
Superman #175
Any Silver Age stories by Edmund Hamilton are a great starting place if you want to see Lexβs historical roots.
Special mentions to Superman #164, Superman #167, and the imaginary story Superman #175 (a personal favorite).
Since I want to start using this account more, I figured Iβd start by moving my Lex Luthor recs over here from twitter!
These are some of my personal favorites, with preference given to works that write him as a complex character in his own right and not just a parody or plot device.
just bought it not long ago! i havenβt had time to read it yet but i plan to read it asap. π«‘

18.11.2024 17:45 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0from a practical perspective also just. the nature of the DC universe is that it has to parallel our own which means superman canβt change anything too radically, which means that slightly-left-of-center is really the best weβre gonna get.
