In this article, I challenge claims of a generational rise of conservative men. In the media and recent academic publications, the so-called ‘youth gender gap’ has been interpreted as a generational phenomenon.

The ‘Danish model’ is the darling of centre-left parties like Labour. The problem is, it doesn’t even work in Denmark | Cas Mudde
This week’s local elections are the latest reminder that when social democrats move rightwards, they’re making a mistake, says academic and author Cas Mudde
After more than 10 years of “the Danish Model”, nativism is hegemonic in the country, the far right polls near level highs again, and the Social Democrats lost Copenhagen and poll at historic low.
European Social Democrats should look at the facts, not the myths!

2️⃣ In combination w/ corresponding attitudes questions, it allows comparing predictors of issue salience and attitudes. People act upon their attitudes towards an issue when they consider the issue important. We need data on both - salience & attitudes - to explain political behavior.

1️⃣ This allows comparing who finds which issues more/less important across all respondents and many issues. It allows assessing the salience of issues that often do not make it to the top 3 important issues, e.g. gender equality. (I would have loved to have this data for my PhD)

We demonstrate the value of closed-ended issue-specific survey questions capturing issue salience. Instead of asking the most-important-issue-question, surveys may ask “how important do you consider X?", providing a list of issues & closed-ended answer scales for each issue. Two advantages: ⬇️

We find that different sociodemographic variables affect different issues’ salience across and within individuals over time. We also find that predictors of individual-level issue salience and attitudes often differ – highlighting the importance of analysing them separately.

Abstract
It is widely accepted in political science – and remarkably established in public discourse – that status anxieties fuel a far right backlash against progressive politics. This narrative suggests that right-wing conservatives perceive the status of women, racial, or sexual minorities as threatening. Using open-ended survey questions fielded in Germany, we show that women and minorities indeed figure in people’s perceptions of status hierarchies, but in very specific ways: First, overall, people still perceive status as largely socioeconomically determined. Second, sociocultural groups figure in perceptions of who is gaining/losing status, less so in perceptions of the top/bottom of society. Third, more than conservative voters, it is social progressives who mention women and minorities as “winners”. While on race/ethnicity, we find evidence for a backlash, on gender and sexuality we find more evidence for a progressive momentum. This matters for progressive politics today and for how we empirically study status concerns.
New article out in @cpsjournal.bsky.social with Tabea Palmtag and @dpzollinger.bsky.social 📝
We use open-ended survey questions (in Germany) to assess how and among whom social status shifts are perceived. This tests cultural backlash narratives in voters' perceptions.

Survey shows sharp gender gap in political harassment
Female mayors face higher rates of politically motivated violence and harassment, a new poll finds.
Poll of 235 mayors: 84% of women candidates were harassed while campaigning vs 64% of men candidates. 25% of women mayors experienced harassment at least 3x/month vs 10% of men mayors. 2x as many women mayors reported threats to their family as men mayors. www.politico.com/news/2025/10...
