NEW: for @nytimes.com, I wrote about a new study showing that queen bumblebees can breathe underwater, surviving submerged for a week
the “remarkable” study stems from a lab snafu, when a co-author thought she accidentally drowned several bees—but later found that they were alive 🧪

Here’s the crazy part about teaching that non-teachers often don’t understand (until they try it):
As you gain more experience, you’re just sorta expected to do more, but (often) aren’t given more pay, status or time to do so.
“Teacher tired” is real.
Props to everyone surviving March.
"Dismantling the fledgling harm-reduction effort, defense analysts say, is among several ways the Trump administration has reorganized national security around two principles: more aggression, less accountability."
Yeah, we have a hybrid that I try to drive in a way that uses the battery as much as possible. Hard with all these hills though!
Yep, the rules need to be changed.
Yeah, that drives me crazy. Nothing a defender can do in that situation other than
Is anyone else already keeping their gas tank full (and trying to hypermile)?
This is one of my favourite facts and I really want to know what it's like to be a mantis shrimp. Sometimes I wonder how you would respond to, or describe, a new colour you have no reference for because it's not like, or a variation of, any of the colours you've ever seen and then I lie down.
Octavia E. Butler said, “These novels are not prophetic. These novels are cautionary tales… The problems that I write about are problems that we can do something about. That's why I write about them.”
And “I hope they're not prophecy because I don't want to live in that world.”
Exciting news, I finished a drawing!
I still actually haven’t decided on a name yet, but I might call it Taylor’s Theorem. I am however open to (good) suggestions (emphasis on good)

The other day I saw a video of an historian (maybe?) saying he didn’t understand why billionaires are opposed to being taxed more because “taxation is the compromise.” And that last ~500 years teaches us what happens when that compromise is not struck.
Can’t stop thinking about it.

Why I've been so reluctant to share posts that don't link to a news source. If you just post a video untethered to any sources, sorry, I don't care how viral it is, I'm not sharing until I've confirmed it's real.
What's the worst?
Yeah, it sucks. And part of me is glad to help students learn and grow in different ways–HS is a good place to learn these lessons. There should be class time devoted to learning how to communicate with teachers. My own kids have become experts. 😂
That men's game was exciting.
Email from a S who got a zero for turning in work identical to another S's. Need to practice staying calm and neutral before our conversation on academic honesty and communicating professionally with teachers. 😬

This was outstanding education reporting.
I was pulling a ton of quotes as I was listening, but I think Jack summarized it best near the end: the issue of vouchers clearly articulates how contradictory and convoluted the ideology of conservatives is right now. (1/2)
Northern California high school basketball titles will be determined this week in addition to state championships in soccer. Here are the results and schedules.
Accommodate students when and how you can. They will appreciate it more than you know
They had names. They had beautiful faces. And they had the same dreams as your kids - crushed when American "precision" bombs slammed into their Minab elementary school, killing 175
Don't blame AI for this. Blame the sick humans who see war as a game

The hardest day for him was when he woke up too late to have any food in the morning.
One of my Black Muslim students is fasting, and if redirecting doesn't work, he is allowed to space out and even nap in my class with the understanding that we will work to catch him up in moments when he is able to focus (sometimes outside of class time).
Ramadan Reminders for Teachers:
1. The basics: Islam is a global religion. Religious practices differ depending on cultural and historical traditions. Language and terminology also vary.
However, core beliefs (5 Pillars) are non-negotiable. That includes observing Ramadan.
This is my shit right here.
MAGA: Teachers are such powerful influences on students they can turn them into political radicals by assigning an excerpt from Ta-Nehisi Coates or convince them to change their gender based on pronoun use -- but not when by praying right in front of them on school property during the school day.
