I don't consider it cruel. There's lots of instances where I'm watching these movies and thinking, "The comics did it better." Slight spoilers follow.
I thought the movie version of the Mole Man was a swing and a miss compared to Jack Kirby's original version. Same with how they defeated Galactus.
