I forgot to mention the initial thought that prompted this, which may be inferred, but I think I should explicitly state:
The mathbrains that run the industrial "finance industry" definitely can control things ahem infinitely better than this. They know what they're doing.

Not only because extreme inequality makes it literally impossible to seriously impose one set of protections and consequences with law to all people equally, but from a less obvious angle, nations and corporations are, or can be, (relatively) "immortal".
Humans only get so old.

In addition, when the "types" of the system in question have been allowed to violate what should be logical (approximate) constraints and therefore enter the domain of the larger entities - ie individuals or families have become as wealthy as corporations or nations - that breaks things like reality

It's true for things of moderate complexity "one size fits all" doesn't work.
Rather than making one system for each person or (current logic) ignoring the problem & forcing individuals to "figure it out", make the system simple enough to fit all people
Not whatever this incoherent alternative is.

There's a reason my pinned post & this one say basically the same thing
People change, as individuals & as "a whole" - but you can't make them change. The more that is forced, the more it will be resisted. And if there is any change it won't be the one intended.
Fix the systems to fit people.

Working back from first principles, thinking how & why things happened in society before it became what it is helps understand problems we are dealing w/ for unclear reasons
For example what I said in this post can be better understood when realizing the logic behind marriage as a legal agreement

Why is anyone allowed to have nukes?
Mutual destruction leads to war of all-against-all.
The destruction of all is "mutual".
Before the destruction is total, paranoia is total. As seen in a lack of trust throughout society - in all kinds of relationships.
Why not mutual construction instead?

From my POV what should be private has been made personal aka secret -financial transactions- & what should be personal has been made public.
But if you're wealthy enough you can keep most things private, for a price.
And by that same logic, when you're poor enough you don't have a choice.

Google Explains How Not To Be A Glasshole | TechCrunch
Here are the do's and don't's of wearing Google Glass. Right from Google. Apparently, and I know this might be a shocker, you're not supposed to stand in the corner of the room and record people with ...
Considering stories about people w/ meta glasses recording w/o consent & other stories about consequences for psych well-being caused by the panopticon enabled by (eg) ring doorbells + ignorant people recording others (w/o consent) for social media this 2014 story from @techcrunch.com is interesting

It's complicated but I think a lot of criticism of "big tech" is misplaced (not all), and should be directed to bad-faith actors in politics & "financial industry".
Even profit driven tech companies, like Microsoft, focus a lot on doing good things. The same should be true for politics (it's not).

And contrary to the points in both those posts, the algorithms do matter. Nobody wants to waste their energies posting into a literal black hole while fooled into thinking otherwise. That's why open data is important, and why I support the tech companies I do

It's a huge topic but related to religious people who don't know or understand what it's about, but still claim the label. Bad-faith actors of many genres have lost the plot.
Things aren't what they are because of titles we affix to them, that's only to simplify for our poor human comprehension.

I think the powers that be have hugely mistaken the possible popularity of seriously believing in good things and standing up for what you think is right.
Rather than their cynical approach that truth doesn't matter and the only embarrassing thing is honestly acknowledging reality.

Absolutely. I couldn't buy into the perverse logic even if I wanted to. I am terminally allergic.
That being said, & w/o fully explaining, I think corporations genuinely operating as a public benefit can be a sort of antithesis to exploitive capitalism & nationalism.
(pardon the language)

It's like I said here. Tools by themself are not good or bad.
It's how they are used. It is always about human decisions.

I am 100% opposed to violence, especially militarized violence, and the mechanism by which soldiers are trained (extreme psychological trauma) is abhorrent, but I do see some reasons for some military actions.
But like many things, "industrialization" is where problems start.

I haven't tested this but this idea, if done optimally (I'm unsure what that would be) seems like a bigger idea than the much hyped chatbots. And the chatbots are pretty great.
But this kinda takes the idea of Reddit and skips the step of making Reddit, thus abiding Ockham's Razor

Compare this with the US government.
I've often said Reddit's a good test-case for how government organizations could use modern technology, but actually Wikimedia is even better.

That being said criticism of the big tech is also too many layers of separation from the actual problem.
Tools, like guns, can be used for good or bad.
Powerful tools are powerful in both directions.
Guns can protect against natural dangers, like bears, or provide food, like by shooting bears.

I consider the AI explosion as a misdirection away from what was a growing consensus among tech workers at Microsoft & Google that they did not want to contribute to the US military in any way.
Redirecting the public focus to OpenAI and then the various spin-offs was a no brainer for the warbrains
