Tobio mumbled something into his pillow and Kei watched him fall asleep before ending the call and looking around.

He had twenty minutes before he had to leave, and twelve dozen bouquets to figure out what to do with.

“No you don’t,” Kei said fondly, “since then you wouldn’t be playing in Rome. But thank you for the sentiment. I wish I was with you too.”

Tobio hummed. “I love you,” he said after a yawn.

“Love you too.”

“Happy birthday, Kei.”

“Thank you, Tobio. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Don’t be sorry, idiot.” Kei turned the camera back around to face himself, letting Tobio see exactly how not-mad Kei was. “I like them. A lot, even. Thank you.”

“Wish I was there with you,” Tobio mumbled, settling back down in bed.

“Oh my god, Tobio —” Kei broke off into laughter again. He cast an eye at the clock on the wall, mirth tempered by knowledge he had to go soon.

“I’m sorry —” Tobio started, sounding dejected, and Kei couldn’t let that stand.

“I’ve never ordered flowers online before,” Tobio grumbled. “Didn’t know how much it’s supposed to cost.”

“And the listings? They didn’t say “a dozen roses”?”

“They were all pictures of just one flower! I thought it was like a build-your-own dozen, with all the different colors!”

Kei laughed, long and loud and very much in love with his boyfriend. His clueless, adorable boyfriend who was accidentally incredibly romantic, which was actually very much his MO, now that Kei was thinking about it.

“You didn’t think the order was a little expensive, King?”

“A dozen…”

“Bouquets. I have twelve dozen roses in my apartment right now.” Kei flipped the camera, showing the rainbow of flowers on the ground.

“Oh…”

“I don’t need a dozen bouquets, Tobio. I don’t have space for all of these! I have to go to work in twenty minutes and I have no clue where to even put them —”

“The flowers were delivered?”

“Yeah, all twelve dozen of them!”

“…I ordered a dozen roses.”

“You ordered a dozen bouquets of roses.”

“I like them just fine. I would have liked one bouquet just as well, though.”

Tobio blinked, a million miles away but amazingly right in the palm of Kei’s hand.

“What?”

Eight in the morning in Sendai was around 1am in Rome. Kei had only called this early once before, when Akiteru had gotten into a car accident and Kei had needed to hear Tobio’s voice.

“No, King, everything is not okay. What the hell are all these flowers?”

“…do you not like them?”

and then had plans to go out with Yamaguchi and Yachi and Akiteru for dinner afterwards, so he wouldn’t be home until much later.

“Kei?” Tobio asked, rubbing sleep from his eyes, video grainy in the low light of his bedroom. “Everything okay?”

Pooping, once, to which Kei hurriedly hung up because Tobio clearly wasn’t going to end the call himself. He was sleeping this time, hair rumpled and voice gruff and Kei’s heart melted, just a little. He’d feel bad about waking his boyfriend up but he had to go to work soon,

Kei pulled out his phone, thumbing to video call and hitting Tobio’s name.

The only times Tobio did not answer Kei’s calls were when he was in volleyball practice — Kei had caught Tobio in the middle of all manner of other activities: running, cooking, out with teammates-turned-friends.

It’d be romantic if it weren’t so absurd and so absurdly out of character.

He blinked as the delivery person held out the clipboard for his signature. He took the pen, scribbling his name as he tried to come up with places to even put all the damn flowers.
