Security Culture Because what they don’t know can hurt them. Security culture is a set of shared practices that minimize risk. Even in an increasingly dangerous time, we can still organize and act—we just have to be prudent. Share sensitive information on a need-to-know basis. If someone does not need to know something, they should never hear anything about it. Don’t speak about anyone’s participation in high-risk activities. Don’t brag, gossip, or speculate. The more people know something that can put someone at risk, the greater the chance that it will reach the wrong ears. That goes for the identity of a person responsible for an action, the legal status of a member of your community, the location of a private meeting, or a plan for future activity. Sharing such information with people who do not need it puts them in the position of being able to endanger others with a single error. Identify your goals and the threat models you are concerned about so you can pick the security measures that meet your needs. When making a plan, start by agreeing on the appropriate security practices so everyone is on the same page. At the beginning, err on the side of caution: it’s easier to shift from a higher level of security to a lower level than vice versa. Trust your gut. Don’t let anyone talk you into doing something you don’t feel good about. It's gentrification of whisper networks, removing people's agency and direct personal investment in practising and control over necessary safety protocols and precautions. Locking these networks beyond a techbro wall, out of reach of anyone who understands outcomes like this are inevitable.

I fundamentally don't believe it is possible for a platform predicated on basically monetising exploitation and precarity of its users to actually care about the users' safety enough to invest in all the best practices necessary to make itself safe.

This app, its data collection practices, and its data breaches will facilitate the abuse and murder of many women. Further, it will make countless others even more hesitant to engage in the whisper networks (online and off) that *do* protect gender marginalized people from violent men.

Protecting women from violent men means thinking about and planning ahead of time re: what violent men are likely to do when they come across a barrier to their control over/access to women. Which is to try circumvent it by any means at their disposal.

If a service or space that purports to help protect women against violent men does not take *extreme* measures to protect the identities of women who engage it, it will inevitably be used by men as another avenue of control and misogynistic violence. This is so horrendous.

I think it's important to note the audience for this isn't really cisgender LGB people (who polling tells us overwhelmingly favor trans rights) but is meant to serve as a permission structure for a broader audience to abandon trans rights while still claiming they're "liberal"
