The world could be such a nice place if we allowed it. It's all so goddamn unnecessary. There's no need for any of it. It's so beautiful here. It should be so cool to be alive

this scene gives me chills each time I watch it. Casablanca was a contemporary film: it was set in 1941 and released in 1942. They were celebrating neighbors and compatriots across the globe. It'd be like releasing a film next year about what's happening in Minnesota

Here’s @realgdt.bsky.social in NYC expanding on his rallying cry of ‘fuck AI!’, talking about how art and even love come from shared pain and movies can save your life. This shit made me and others in the audience cry as much as his version of Frankenstein…

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro says 'I'd rather die' than use generative AI Del Toro's new Frankenstein adaption reimagines Mary Shelley's 1818 Gothic novel. Frankenstein was like a tech bro: "creating something without considering the consequences," he explains.

“I am not interested, nor will I ever be interested. I'm 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak. ... The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’ And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I'd rather die.’” 🫡

B&W photo of a building facace Relief sculpture of a lithe figure in a dancing-like pose

I'm just a lowly art historian, but in moments like these I always think back to one early sign of Trump's wanton, pointless destructiveness: his demolition of the priceless & irreplaceable Art Deco relief sculptures on facade of the Bonwit Teller building, which he tore down to build Trump Tower

There is not yet wide evidence that "gen AI" actually enhances researchers' and developers' results. Some of the most headline-grabbing work that claimed it does is now actively disavowed by the institution under which auspices it was done. That is a MASSIVE ding on the reliability of that research.

Digital Necromancy in the Age of AI Thanks to advances in AI, we are no longer allowed to truly die. The peace of the grave and the finality that defines the human condition are all being sacrificed on the altar of artificial intelligen...

I wrote about the horrifying use of AI to resurrect the dead as hollow simulacrum puppeted by the living and why we should reject normalizing this as it dehumanizes the living and desecrates our humanity.

Surprise surprise. A week after Sarah McBride gives cover fire for throwing trans people under the bus, some Dems are privately indicating they’ll capitulate on trans youth healthcare and citing the pseudoscientific Cass Report literally drafted in consultation with hate groups.

I keep getting asked if it’s legal to spend our campaign funds on food drives or our high school public service grants and the answer is YES. It is.

Politicians and Democratic organizations need to use their coffers to help people NOW and fill in the gaps that Trump has created.

say it again:

4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities

ROI for NIH and NSF for local economies is conservatively 4x, often close to 10x

demolishing higher education is economic sabotage

which meant it was harder and harder for anything to stay hidden. Hard if not impossible to adapt - closest thing would be Fringe, which traded distrust of the govt for distrust of corporations and irrelevancy of the govt.

My thesis generally is that two competing forces just meant the x files wasn't going to survive: 9/11 (first the flood of belief the US govt could do no wrong, then the flood of belief that it was largely incompetent), and then technological shifts like mid 2000s internet and cellphone cameras,

This is a solution and one lots of people are going to. It works. It’s also pedagogically terrible. Fundamentally ableist in structure. It assesses skills that are not the relevant skills for any meaningful intellectual activity. It represses skills that are meaningful. I don’t have an answer.

That essay about students using chatbots to cheat on their essays is so depressing for me because it feels like curiosity and a love of learning are dying from the world. Why even attend school if you’re not hungry to learn? Don’t you have the slightest interest in this world? ...
