Love Over Gold just about edges out Making Movies as my favourite Dire Straits record.
And the clincher is that Love Over Gold has this superb slow burner of a song.

Decades later, no braver song has gone so high in the UK charts, no performance so exemplifying of austerity in stripping back to basics.

I thought the debut was good but patchy.
Here, the South Yorkshire post punkers have added a level of consistency in quality and sound so far above Waiting For A Miracle, and the high is even greater than on that solid debut.
This should be a post punk classic!

There are albums you hear for the first time that leave you gobsmacked they're not regarded as classics.
This post-punk record is amongst the very best in its field - every song a near-instant standout
Such a bloody good song!

The third album from the Failsworth band, Planet Helpless was a softening of their distinct sound, and a commercial and critical failure.
But long time fans recognise the crafty hooks and soaring melodies present.

Here's my shortlist for #5debutalbums8084.
In truth, I think my 5 are pretty settled, but that's not going to stop me from listening to as much of the below because what an incredible period of breakthrough music these five years proved to be.
Janet Jackson's 'The Velvet Rope' was released #OnThisDay in 1997.
Themes of abuse, self-harm and domestic violence were wrongly played out as cheap selling points.
Now, the record is rightly lauded as revolutionary, with Jackson taking control of her own image, mind, and body.

The lyric I'm thinking about today | King Crimson - I Talk To The Wind
"I'm on the outside looking inside
What do I see?
Much confusion, disillusion
All around me"
#GiveItUp
The Talk Talk lyric I'm thinking about today:
"And I hope that I've kept you amused
To wipe that spit right off my boots
And when I'm home and thinking in the dark
I hope that none of this has had to go too far"
#StopMakingSense
The Talking Heads lyric I'm thinking about today:
"Facts all come with points of view
Facts don't do what I want them to
Facts just twist the truth around
Facts are living turned inside out
Facts are getting the best of them
Facts are nothing on the face of things"

🎶 Hey
One of the most 'how was that not a single' songs of all time.
An absolute classic makes my list and is my second consecutive choice from 1989.
Suede's 'Sci-Fi Lullabies' was released #OnThisDay in 1997.
A collection of B-Sides that come in at just over 2 hours of glam and alternative rock, the power and quality of which puts the greatest hits of many contemporaries to shame.

As ever with these records and noisy music best turned up to 12, it's the more introspective moments which leave the biggest impact - The Dance Of Maya and You Know, You Know are going to be stuck in my head for a long time!
A joyous, forthright, and bonkersly brilliant album.
Every single one of the 8 tracks so delicately put together yet raucously played out is a delight.
This is mind boggling music 54 years after its creation; God only knows what impact it had on release.
The legacy it left is clearly strong, but this is epic on its own merits...

I love a recommendation out of the blue, and when I'm promised jazz rock fusion to melt my mind, I'm all in.
This lived up to expectations with bells and amps on...
David Sylvian on recording 'Blemish' (Flux Magazine)
"There was this sense of trauma that needed addressing. It was part of a personal evolution, where things would shift for me in a quietly dramatic way. I had a sense of what I was looking for."

06.10.2025 11:40 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Absolutely epic. I really need to get the book, and having seen the t-shirt, need that too!
06.10.2025 11:39 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0One criticism of this format is the experimental third side getting a little tiring - the Bastards are of course much more spread out on studio albums and much more effective, but put this album on shuffle and you're in for a treat on many repeat listens.
06.10.2025 11:14 — 👍 6 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The 3 hour list is wonderful, particularly the Brawlers and Bawlers sections.
Bottom Of The World, Road To Peace, Rains On Me, Long Way Home, Widow's Grove, Little Drop Of Poison are all instant classics in the Waits canon for me...
