My Bloody Valentine | Isn't Anything
More than just the precursor to Loveless, but with the same pitfalls that its successor has for leaving me cold. Won't be in my 5, but enjoyed revisiting it for the first time in too long this morning.

The Housemartins | London 0 Hull 4
Always a fun listen, but this was always on the outside looking in, even in a less crowded bracket. The singles are the best things here for me, and it won't be in contention for my 5. Still a cracker though.

Four gorgeous records for a sunny Wednesday afternoon.

Toshi Tsuchitori, Ryuichi Sakamoto | Disappointment
Been a while since I listened to some challenging jazz. Sakamoto ditched preconceived ideas of what he had been and would still become, with an avant-garde collaboration of harsh musique concrete.
Harsh but good.

It's 70 minutes of pure gold. The sort of double album that makes you wish it was twice as long, especially closing out with the epic 10 minute Green Eyes.
Nothing here is ever straightforward, and it kept me hooked from start to finish. Groovy, neo-soul gorgeousness.

21. Erykah Badu | Mama's Gun (2000)
Been a lot of noise about this album the past few weeks, and it's easy to see why.
Coming three years after her debut, this is a tour de force in songwriting and emotive vocals about very real issues and feelings...

Yeah I was really reticent to change, but it's been so good. Will be writing a follow-up piece to this to come out in a few weeks, but I can't speak for Tidal or Apple Music. But if they're half as good as Qobuz, they're a huge improvement on Spotify.

Goodbye Spotify, Hello Qobuz
Years of doubt and dozens of excuses, but finally leaving Spotify is a big step in the right direction.
A month ago, I deleted Spotify. Qobuz isn't perfect, but it's a massive step in the right direction.
As my free trial comes to an end, the decision to swap gets better and better 👇

If I ever did a list of perfect albums, this would be on it without a doubt.
Second Skin was my other choice this morning, and I'll most likely have it at some point.

Bros | Push
It won't be in my 5, but I'll always love it for the happy times it's given me and Lisa. No record can bring a smile to our faces and (happy) tears to our eyes as quickly and as certainly as this 👇

I'm a sucker for a calm after the storm sort of ending. Following the rip-roaring guitar fest that is Loveless' opener, an ambient soundscape takes hold, equally as captivating but not nearly as chaotic.

Mammal Hands | Animalia
Sax, piano, and drums has rarely sounded this captivating as a trio. I'm entranced by their new record, and Animalia proves the Norwich lads had something special from the start. The best stuff is in the front, but nothing here to sniff at.

Neneh Cherry | Raw Like Sushi
Not many cooler than this woman. A debut that defies description and genre. Equally brilliant singing and rapping, Cherry can do it all, and seemingly effortlessly too.
Almost certainly a lock in for my 5.

Simply Red | Picture Book
I know it's sacrilege to many, but this debut is genuinely good. In places, it's bloody brilliant. The title track and Jericho are among my favourite 80s tracks, but I think this will end up missing out on my 5.

Somehow left off my initial list, but this slice of jangly indie heaven really does hit the spot. It won't make my 5, but I really enjoyed it this morning for the first time in years.

🎶 Untitled 1
⏱️ 4:08 - 5:36
Keane were one of my first musical loves. Easy to take the mick out of, but they made so much brilliant music.
Case in point, this ethereal masterpiece which switches into the most synthy goodness for the final minute. Truly captivating.

This time next week, I'll be back working. After illness, redundancy and too much stress, everything is looking up again.
I really don't think I'd have made it through last year without music. So thank you to everyone who joined in the journey.

Mammal Hands | Circadia
If there's a finer jazz album released this year, I will eat two hats.
A gorgeous blend of ambient soundscapes and classic free jazz inspired by Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane. From start to finish, an absolute joy and beauty.
