Yeah well I know that now, thankfully.
"The Beatles are overrated."
Yep, I used to be one of those people. Stubborn with it too. A smart man knew better than to argue, and gave me another way in to music.
This is how Al Stewart's 'The News From Spain' changed my life π

Olive Jones | For Mary
Friday 13th my backside - there's some good fortune out there this week with these new albums. Jones' debut is a cathartic mix of personal songs and jazz-tinged anger all held together by a voice that could melt butter.

Tracy Chapman | S/T
A seminal debut, whose reputation and hit single perhaps overshadow just how good the entire album really is. If this misses out on my 5, it says everything about the other albums it's up against and nothing about this beauty.
#MusicSky
It's probably my favourite.

π£οΈ R.E.M.
πΆ Leave
β±οΈ 6:39 - 7:17
One of the longest songs in R.E.M.'s discography, and the blaring synth never outstays its welcome.
A near-false ending gives way to one final onslaught which sends a shiver down my spine every single time.
She's a therapist but half her working week is at a university so she benefits from a lot of time off!

Every day in 2026, I'm playing and sharing a song that I think is perfect. No extra commentary. No notes. Just the song.
Today's song is Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir'.

Fingers crossed for you mate. Lisa's the same with that, and she gets eight weeks off every summer π hope you enjoy the extra music time as a consolation!

Absolutely. Demon Days (which has most of the hits you'll likely know), but so many great album tracks.
I also loved Song Machine Vol. 1, which came out during Covid.
As long as you avoid Cracker Island and probably Humanz at this stage, you're good.
How's the knee feeling?
There's a veritable treasure trove of great stuff in that discography Ricky, but if I could tempt you with just one song of theirs, it's this one from my (and many others) favourite Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach.

Oh this was completely off my radar. Will look forward to this.

πΆ If There Is Something
β±οΈ 5:01 - 6:34
My favourite Roxy Music song, an encapsulation of love through a lifetime.
Fittingly, the final minute and a half is perhaps the most captivating of all, a fitting conclusion to any love song sung by Bryan Ferry.
Four tracks take up the best part of an hour, and there's not a dull moment.
For a taster, closer 'Sometimes It's Death' is stupendously patient, meandering sax above twinkling keys buried deep in the mix. It's one of the best things I've heard all year.

Work Money Death | A Portal To Here
New jazz out today, and it's ridiculously good! This Yorkshire ensemble's heroes include Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, and Pharoah Sanders. At their best, they just about match that level. Seriously, this is captivating cosmic magic...

I'd love to see them live
I love that! And more fool them...

Tinariwen | Hoggar
One of the most exciting albums released this week, and it's more than lived up to the promise. Returning to their more traditional roots, this is a contemplative 'world' music album that hits all the right spots.

A full, busy and positive first week at work, but always time for great music.

Two weeks after release, Gorillaz' 'The Mountain' is already feeling like one of their best.
Up there with Demon Days and Plastic Beach, it's the record the world needs, not necessarily one it deserves π

One day of the working week left, and 7-a-side tonight. Enough time for stir fry and a slice of Japan on the side.
Ironically on this busy day, Quiet Life is spinning this evening.

Another one of those gorgeous outro switches which make up about half of my choices so far.
The first 4 and a half minutes is BOC at their most upbeat, then the ambient ending is trademark mystery. Spellbinding.

Hello Michael! Hope you've had a happy Wednesday. The weekend is getting closer...

Charles Mingus | The Clown
From 1957, some absolutely sensational jazz to be had here, not least on the opening track which is probably the most euphoric I've ever felt on a first listen of a jazz track.
