Completed in 1915, Akron's Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is the former home of F.A. Seiberling (co-founder of Goodyear) and his family. The estate is open for tours from April-Dec & features a 64,500 sq. foot Manor House and 70 acres of gardens.
We took these photos today, & it's gorgeous here right now, so plan to visit this weekend 🌻 🌼 Visit Sat or Sun 10-6, last admission 4pm. Not Mon because Stan Hywet is closed on Labor Day, 9/1. Make sure to stop by butterfly habitat 🦋 because it closes on 9/7. Have a safe, fantastic holiday weekend!

The chimney project (for now) at the Gate Lodge and & Manor House Breakfast Room has been completed, and all of the scaffolding is being removed. These chimneys will be restored in the future when funding is secured. Here are some photos!

We took a walk today & and one of the birds we saw was a beautiful American Goldfinch perched in the Great Garden. Join the Audubon Society on Aug. 8, 8-10 am on a hike around the estate to look for this and other bird species. 13 & over and SH members are free. Sign up at stanhywet.org🐤 🐦

F.A. & Gertrude Seiberling's son, Willard married Mary Gerrish on July 18, 1923 in Oberlin, Ohio. This photo was taken about 1940; Mary & Willard are in front of the Great Hall fireplace between two unidentified men.
There is scaffolding around chimneys on the Gate Lodge & the Manor House Breakfast Room. We're dismantling these two chimneys because they’re showing signs of structural issues. So for everyone's safety the chimneys are being removed down to the shelf area & capped until they can be restored.

James Penfield "Penny" Seiberling was born #OnThisDate in 1898, the 4th child of F.A. & Gertrude Seiberling. F.A. often wrote letters to his children on their birthdays; here's a snippet of one that F.A. wrote to Penny when he turned 5, noting the overlap with July 4th celebrations.

Founders' Day Weekend is June 6-8, commemorating the 1st conversation 90 yrs ago between 2 admitted alcoholics at Stan Hywet's Gate Lodge, the beginning of AA, an org. that has helped millions worldwide. We hope to see you this weekend.

This cool, misty day was perfect for planting annuals in the Great Garden. Brian in hort creates a detailed planting map to guide staff & volunteers who planted 8,000 (!) annuals. All done in one day!

What's in bloom?? Irises, peonies, lupines, oh my! This next week is peak for irises of every shape & color blooming all over the estate. Starting to bloom are peonies &lupines. So plan a visit to our gorgeous gardens soon! Open Tues.-Sun. 10-6, last admission at 4pm. Closed Mondays.
