5. Peri-weaning is the period when a newborn transitions from consuming their mother’s milk to solid food. Emmanuel and team found that antagonism of RELMb during this period in mice prone to food allergy restores tolerance to food and protects offspring from developing food allergy later in life
4. Tolerance to food is going to be regulated by the local production of indole-derivatives which drive the production of RORgt+ regulatory T cells.
3. RELMb is found to disrupt tolerance to food by modulating the gut microbiome by depleting Lactobacilli and Alistipes which are both indole-metabolite producing organisms.
2. We deleted RELMb from allergy-prone mice and showed protection from Food Allergic symptoms and the development of food antigen-specific IgE and Anaphylaxis.
1. RELMb is identified as a biomarker for food allergies: increased levels are observed in the sets of food allergic mouse models and patients with food allergy.
New paper led by Emmanuel Victor out this month in @nature.com expanding the immune mechanisms of food allergies. 🧵

1/ New in #ScienceImmunologyResearch! We explored how the brain maintains equilibrium with the immune system. Our focus? The key player in immune tolerance and tissue function regulation: regulatory T cells (Tregs). Let’s dive in! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

So happy to see this story finally out! Thread explanation coming shortly
#idsky #medsky #pedsky 🧪 if you were to make a syllabus of things the general public should read if they want to understand vaccines, what would you suggest?
Also what do you think is most important for the general public to understand about vaccines?
That vaccines imitate the infection- doesn’t make sense to be scared of the vaccine and not the disease it’s designed to protect against.
