The sad part is how precarious the road to an academic position had been even before this administration took aim at higher ed. Now it just seems not even worth trying for these kids, and who can blame them.
I just had virtually the same conversation with my nephew (humanities edition) - he’s graduating college in May and had wanted to go into academia but says it’s totally infeasible with so many departments not taking grad students and funding drying up.
We’re losing an entire generation of scholars.
Melissa & Doug sticker books are great for flights. I used to buy a couple before every trip.
You can also use this easy template from @ucs.org to urge Congress to oppose the administration's plans to dismantle NCAR.

(The increasing disposability of EVs and other vehicles is yet another argument for better investment in public transit, including high-speed electric rail)
We loved our Ioniq so much we got a new one, and I know the totaled one will go to good use providing parts (insurance will salvage it to get money back). But also, bumpers packed with sensors/radar/Lidar for safety systems are why it's so difficult and expensive to fix newer cars, not just EVs.
Re the fender bender, I feel your pain. We were victims of a road rage incident that led to a fender bender and insurance wound up totaling our Ioniq 5. So depressing - perfectly good car.
It isn't just EVs: high-tech safety systems in newer cars have led to >1/4 of cars in accidents being totaled.
The latter was, tbh, my strongest motivation for going EV. Spite: the climate-action superpower.
I know this is also a luxury but highly recommend the electrical upgrade and level 2 charger - it makes charging a complete non-issue.
We've been EV-only for years and can't imagine going back - they're such better cars and filling up on sunshine (via rooftop solar) never gets old.
Also: surging oil prices are reinforcing the deep unfairness of rooftop/community solar & EVs still being a relative luxury (along w/ public transit!).
A heads down approach will not save science. We need to speak up, live our values, and demand integrity.

Winter is back for those of us in the Northeast, who are probably getting pretty sick of the cold at this point. But here's the thing--it wasn't actually that cold, historically speaking. And uh, sorry to the folks out West 🧪
I was just thinking I hadn't seen a post from Evan in some time and came to see where he'd been - this is such sad news. I'm so sorry, Maria. I deeply appreciated Evan's commitment to conservation and forest resilience. He will be missed.
If strong El Niño, then yes - low snowpack would be likely.
No, El Niño wouldn't kick in till this summer, lasting until at least the end of the year.
The plus side is that 2015-2016 was a wake-up call that led to a flurry of preparedness efforts across the Northwest that continues today.
The bad news is the resilience gap is still enormous and being outpaced by worsening impacts. A strong El Niño will take its toll, here and elsewhere.
For reference, the 2015-2016 El Niño had devastating effects on the Northwest.
Washington saw irrigation shortages, agricultural losses, fish die-offs, reduced hydropower output (with increased reliance on fossil fuels to meet electricity demand), and degraded water- and air-quality.
"I think a person can have enough judgement from reading books and being informed outside of traditional experience..."
"What books would you have read that would have informed your opinion on what grants to cancel based on DEI?"
"There were no books."
"Do you think it's inappropriate in any way that someone in their 20s with no experience with grants or federal government was making personal judgement calls about what grants to cancel?"
"No, I don't think it's inappropriate."
A 2020 Bureau of Indian Affairs report estimated Tribal relocation costs at $4.8 billion over the next 50 years. Meanwhile…
This is more than twice what it would cost the federal government to honor its trust responsibility and fund Tribes to relocate villages and infrastructure away from sea level rise and other climate hazards.
Instead, they’re literally putting fuel on the fire.

Bounds of snow in the PNW this week is a loaded gun for potential flooding next week. A Pineapple Express with record amounts of moisture may slam Washington and British Columbia from Monday-Wednesday, possibly dropping up to 10 inches of rain in the Cascades (freezing levels ~8,000 ft).

The official NOAA stats out this week confirm that winter 2025-26 was the warmest on record across a huge portion of the western and central U.S., which has contributed to extremely low mountain snowpack & worsened the CO River crisis. Meanwhile, record March heat is in forecast.
