The Ladies of Llangollen, Eleanor Butler (1739–1829) and Sarah Ponsonby (1755–1831), were two upper-class Irish women who lived together as a couple.
The pair moved to a Gothic house in Llangollen, North Wales, in 1780 after leaving Ireland to escape the social pressures of conventional marriages.

Chase of the Wild Goose β€” Lurid Editions Chase of the Wild Goose is the forgotten queer novel of the 1930s – a joyful corrective to the misery of The Well of Loneliness, and amiable companion to Woolf’s time-travelling Orlando.

There's a 1936 novel about them: Chase of the Wild Goose by Mary Gordon. There was a recent edition by @lurideditions.bsky.social

Today's #SapphicSeptember rec:

Chase of the Wild Goose, by Mary Gordon and published by @lurideditions.bsky.social

Originally published in 1936, this is a gloriously romantic, melodramatic and weird retelling of the lives of the Ladies of Llangollen.

Jet-lagged, gender-shifting, and gloriously unclassifiableβ€”In Transit follows Pat through airports, opera, revolution & reinvention. A 1969 anti-novel of sexual amnesia, identity flux & feminist undergrounds. Brophy was way ahead of us. #QueerLit
