In Australia, 45% of Gen Z vote for the Greens. Is it any wonder with the way our governments (and both the two main parties) continues to align themselves with fossil fuel companies, open more coal mines and succumb to lobbying across all fronts. #auspol #climate #genz

Wow. Queensland which is most at risk of extreme weather events and much else, according to a latest #climate report puts coal and gas at the centre and have extended coal mines by 20 years.
Go figure. Suicidal.

Two elections and still the Australian government hasn’t brought in environmental laws to protect wildlife and nature.
And they continue to open coal mines while claiming to take action on #climate.
It’s shameful. #auspol #hypocrisy

Australia’s horrifying climate future in four charts – and how we can avoid the worst
Maps released by the Australian Climate Service show just how bad things will get for heatwaves, drought and coastal flooding
While some leaders may call climate change a "con job", we know it's impacting ever corner of our country.
Ignoring these warnings & failing to invest in action + adaptation betrays communities across the country and leaves us unprepared.

‘Getting ridiculous’: Bureaucrats sat on critical pollution study for four years
Internal documents reveal the level of concern inside the NSW environment watchdog about releasing a report that mining companies did not want published.
Why when mining employees comprise less than 3% of Australian workforce, and have successfully pushed for their mines over the health of the planet, have any influence at all? Now their hiding reports on lead levels in children’s blood

New research shows that based on genetic, behavioural, ecological and archaeological evidence, dingoes are distinct from domestic dogs, including South-East Asian village dogs, which look superficially similar.

Did you know it’s an offence in Western Australia under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 to feed native fauna without a licence, it can attract fines up to $20,000
Instead:
🌱 put native plants in your garden
💧 leave out fresh water

The Rodrigues parakeet’s last day: what one extinct bird tells us about the role of museums
Two specimens at a museum in Cambridge are the only physical evidence this bird ever existed.
150 years ago today, the last known Rodrigues parakeet died.
It - and one other specimen - is now in @zoologymuseum.bsky.social: the only physical evidence the species ever existed.
I wrote about them & the importance of #museums in our knowledge of #extinction:

The Rodrigues parakeet’s last day: what one extinct bird tells us about the role of museums

The last known Rodrigues parakeet died exactly 150 years ago. This story ticks a lot of natural history museum bingo boxes:
✔️Sex bias in natural history
✔️Colonial legacies
✔️Dodos
But also, how museum specimens act as irreplaceable records of lost biodiversity:

Murray Watt’s decision to tick off fish farms in Macquarie Harbour using Albo’s weakened Env law reminds me of the con trick Labor and LEAN played on Aust community in 2022. Elect them , they said and they would introduce new stronger Env laws. They lied. Maugean skate headed for extinction.

A slightly brirry nighttime photo of a chudditch - the animals is chestnut brown with white spots. It is feeding on a dead western grey kangaroo. The quoll's pink nose is just visible.
The prettiest of Australia's four species of #quoll is arguably the chudditch (western quoll). Unfortunately you can't tell from this terrible photo, partly because it has its face buried in a kangaroo.
