Unintended effects of Japanโs wildlife trade bans on 3 species.
Trade in these species dropped but shifted to other vulnerable species, highlighting the need for consumer research, monitoring and enforcement beyond banned species.

Banning threatened species trade can incrase trades of non-banned species - evdence from Japan based on the synthetic difference-in-differences approach. Great work!

Banning wildlife trade can increase trade of other threatened species
Wildlife trade bans can encourage buyers and sellers to trade in similar species that havenโt been banned but may still be endangered.
New study! ๐จ Banning wildlife trade can increase trade in other threatened species ๐จ
We find Japanโs ban on 3 species led to rise in trade of others. Bans alone aren't enoughโwe need consumer insights & monitoring to avoid shifting overexploitation elsewhere.

While it is necessary to regulate trade for conservation purposes, if this leads to the overexploitation of other species, it can have the opposite effect.
Therefore, it is necessary to consider the regulation effectiveness and to design a comprehensive policy beyond the policy-targeted species.

However, there was an unintended โspillover effectโ in which the volume of trade in non-regulated species, including threatened species, increased due to the trade ban policy.
In other words, the introduction of the ban might lead negative impacts on the conservation of other threatened species.

With 11-year online sales data, including before & after the ban, we confirmed that there were almost no illegal sales on the online market for the policy-targeted species after the ban.

We found 'spillover' effects caused by wildlife trade bans that increase the unregulated trade of threatened species.

We found #spillover effects caused by wildlife trade bans that increase the unregulated trade of threatened species.
Ban is an important intervention but not enough for biodiversity conservation.
