Well I didn't win the Aesthetica Creative Writing Award for fiction (boo*) but as a shortlister I AM in the gorgeous anthology (hooray!) so it's a win. Can't wait to get this** onto my bookshelf

"After my sister died, a koi fish started flapping around in the gutter down the street, just thrashing there like it had a point to make & no way to say it." Gorgeous work from dream double act @mizuki-yama.bsky.social/@doesithavepockets.bsky.social. Mizuki wields prose like surgeons wield scalpels

Thank you so much. I was hoping readers wouldnt think this is purely of historical interest. There’s definitely a reason I wrote it right now :)

I love this heartbreaking horrifying piece too, Jaime. It's a story that we need to hear more than ever these days, and your take on it is very effective.

This makes me so happy. It's always lovely when people appreciate something you have written, but when it's for the exact effect you were trying very hard to create - and you weren't sure would land - it's particularly satisfying.

Thank you Cuyler. I really appreciate that.

Also people who know me in real life are going to say "that's weird, because in real life he says so little while speaking so so much""

It absolutely did! I consider it a massive massive compliment that this has impact but that impact is hiding in the negative space. That was exactly the intention, so you couldn't have given me a better reassurance

Thank you so much @mizuki-yama.bsky.social - I really appreciate the read, the share and your take. This is a story where I've tried to take English understatement and weaponise it. All based on truth, by the way. Those terrible adverts really did appear in newspapers in 1938. They devastate me

RFK Jr: "Two weeks ago we ended, under your leadership, a twenty year war on women".

Three out of five men in this shot have been accused of sexual misconduct, harassment or abusive behaviour towards women. A fourth signed into law a near-total abortion ban in his state as governor.

But don't stop reading there! Its my second time in these hallowed pages, and this time I'm with 2 of my favourite writers - @theodora.bsky.social and @emilyrinkema.bsky.social - who have fantastic stories in there. Read them, then keep reading because New Flash Fiction Review is always full of gold

"The lights are dimming across Europe, the darkness seeping through the cracks of the British everyday."

SO thrilled my 1930s, very British, allegorical domestic drama - Appeasement - was a finalist for the New Flash Fiction Award by @nffr.bsky.social.

Between the Lines | Issue #39 John had always found women hard to read. Some favoured long, looping fonts, a copperplate calligraphy like wedding invitations.

My story, Between the Lines, is out on @nffr.bsky.social and in good company with @jaimegill.bsky.social and @emilyrinkema.bsky.social: newflashfiction.com/between-the-...

Anne, I’m so appreciative of you buying the magazine and so glad the story connected. It’s one of those stories that technically isn’t autobiographical (none of those characters existed, none of those events happened) yet totally is. I have lost a few friendships over the years and still mourn them

Writing news so thrilling I'm in shock 3 days later. The Missouri Review has accepted one of my stories. They are my dreamiest dream publication with an incredible history: I’ll share a byline with idols like Ursula K Le Guin & Annie Proulx. I'm especially thrilled because it’s a very personal story

Aaargh I have to wait four months! Does it look nice? Is there an illustration or artwork accompanying my piece? Or plain text? I don’t mind just curious - and thank you for actually buying something I am in! (Unless you are a contributor too and this is a comp copy).

So proud my story The Hate Baby is shortlisted for the Aesthetica Creative Writing Award. There’s a slim chance of a prize but better yet it’ll appear in one of their gorgeous anthologies. Thank you
@aestheticamagazine.com.web.brid.gy - and @doesithavepockets.bsky.social for giving it its first home

I didn’t quite make it to the winner’s podium but my neo-colonial nightmare Full Circle Perfect Square made top 10 at the Oxford Flash Fiction Awards and I’m thrilled I’ll have THREE shortlisted stories in the @oxfordflashfiction.bsky.social anthology. So exciting & they’re lovely to work with too…

So lovely to put some faces to names! Glad you had a good time. Thanks for all your wonderful work and energy, getting my queer Kun Khmer story published by you was a big highlight of 2025 for me (where else could it have gone if you’d said no haha)

See, I can keep secrets! I won the Sand Hills Prose Contest in Feb but waited until now to reveal it. Its for People You May Know, my hymn to friendship and lament for its loss, a personal favourite of mine. Sadly it’s not online but you could order the mag. Look at the cover! sandhillsmagazine.com

Oyster River Pages really are wonderful champions for writers and are nominating one of my most beloved (and long) stories, Black Sky, Blue Earth for a 2026 Pushcart Prize - an incredible honour, given the calibre of writers they publish. So grateful www.oysterriverpages.com/black-sky-bl...
