Such a pleasure to be part of this work, @thefunguskidd.bsky.social ! Honored to contribute to the discovery of Sporothrix davidiellisii and to help recognize the legacy of Dr. David Ellis. Exciting times for fungal taxonomy! 😍😍😍

A new 'second tier pathogenic' species within the Sporothrix pallida complex, isolated from an Australian cat. Sporothrix davidellisii, named for Australia's finest mycologist. Such a pleasure to work with @fhagen.bsky.social @amrodrigues85.bsky.social and others on this.

πŸ”¬ Genotyping Sporothrix during epidemics: Which method works best?

Our study evaluates DNA sequencing, RAPD, AFLP, and SSR to track the spread of Sporothrix in outbreaks. While DNA sequencing and RAPD are useful for species identification, AFLP and SSR provide the highest resolution for fine-scale population studies. These findings guide molecular surveillance efforts in Sporothrix epidemiology.

πŸ“Œ Key insights:
βœ… AFLP & SSR: Best for detecting genetic diversity and subgroups
βœ… DNA sequencing & RAPD: Limited intraspecific resolution

Pathogens and planetary change - Nature Reviews Biodiversity This Review explores the relationship between emerging infectious diseases and biodiversity loss, and how both are connected to global environmental changes in the Anthropocene.

Climate change is creating the perfect conditions for the emergence of pathogenic fungi threatening humans and animals. πŸŒπŸ„ What was once rare could become commonβ€”and that’s terrifying! We must act now.

Our review is out in Nature Reviews Genetics! rdcu.be/d5AY2

We show how phylogeny-based methods can resolve the problem of non-independence in genomic datasets.

These methods must be considered an essential part of the comparative genomics toolkit.
