Nobelmedaljen til Goebbels I 1943 reiste Hamsun til Tyskland og møtte propagandaminister Joseph Goebbels. Tilbake på Nørholm sendte han sin nobelmedalje til Goebbels som takk for møtet:

Aquela vez que Knut Hamsun, um dos maiores escritores da Noruega, deu sua medalha do Nobel de Literatura para Goebbels depois de voltar da Alemanha, viagem que tinha feito para conhecer Hitler. Hamsun queria agradecer por tudo. Qualquer semelhança talvez não seja mera coincidência?

P.S.: in Norway, the fascist party at the time was called National Reunion (1933-1945). They 1,41 % of the votes in the parliamentary elections in 1936. The leader, Quisling, asked Hitler to invade Norway. Quisling expected to govern after the invasion, but the Germans never really allowed him to.

Hamsun openly supported nazism. The novel "Growth of the Soil", one of his greatest pieces, was written intentionally to propagate the idea of the Norwegian superiority.
