I have tickets for Friday's game at Wrigley, but not sure my replica MLB umpire's getup will arrive in time. If it does, look for me in action. I'll be the guy surrounded by people screaming at me to get out of the aisle and sit down.

Best part of this #Cubs outburst? Knowing it's all Yadi's fault.

In 1969, the #Mets famously steamrolled the #Cubs by going 43-17 over a 60-game stretch late in the season.

Over their last 60 games this season, the #Brewers are 44-16.

Moises Ballesteros got plunked on the ankle by a pitch in the 9th inning of the I-Cubs' loss tonight. He hobbled down to first base, before hobbling off the field. He then needed help to get to the locker room. Didn't appear to be something he would just shake off.

List of Ryan Dempster's consecutive scoreless starts from Baseball-Reference.com.

Was looking at @baseball-reference.com's Stathead tool re: Cade Horton's scoreless IP streak. Does anyone recall Ryan Dempster's 33 consecutive scoreless IP for #Cubsβ€”across 5 GS!β€”in 2012? I have zero recall of it, and it's damn impressive. Now I can almost forgive the Harry Caray impersonation.

Also from the They Coulda Been Cubs file: In his first start for the Rays Monday, Adrian Houser gave up 11 hits and 5 runs in 5 2/3 IP against the Angels.

Since rejoining the Mariners, Eugenio Suarez has gone 3-for-26 with 1 HR and 11 K. In other words, he would have been a seamless addition to the #Cubs offense in the past homestand.

On this #Cubs off day, I flipped on the White Sox game on MLB TV and switched the audio feed to Len Kasper’s radio call, which reminded me how deeply I prefer Kasper to Boog Sciambi, which made me very sad. Why do I do these things to myself?

Cade Horton Made History Twice in that Dominant Start Cade Horton was as good as we’ve seen him yesterday against the Reds. Through 5.2 innings of work – which took him just 67 pitches and allowed the Cubs to steal some extra rest for him – Horton allowed just two hits and no runs. He struck out six and walked nobody. His 75 game score was his highest of the season, and the eye test said he was just really on one. He also made some history. With that scoreless start, Horton set a Cubs rookie record: Cade Horton pushes his scoreless innings streak to 23.1 IP! The longest scoreless streak by a @Cubs rookie EVER pic.twitter.com/Y0sVhexdkWβ€” MLB (@MLB) August 6, 2025 There was so much to like from the game, but how about this: Horton’s 83.6% strike rate in the game was the highest for ANY starting pitcher in ANY start this season. And it was the highest for ANY Cubs starting pitcher in ANY season since 2000! He made so much history in that game! His development and improvement throughout this season, at the highest level, has been one of the most impressive and important stories this season for me. He has worked in the zone most of the year without getting blown up because the stuff is so good, and over his last six starts, he’s really started to get more whiffs, too. His strikeout rate had been just 16.5%, but in these last six starts? It’s 20.5%. You want to see that kind of improvement from a guy like Horton, whose walk rate has held steady in that time. "Today was the best my delivery has felt." Cade Horton after his 5.2 scoreless innings at Wrigley. pic.twitter.com/gA2vAJCUp4β€” Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 6, 2025 Horton is down to a 3.18 ERA on the season over 79.1 innings, and seemingly should start to get at least a LITTLE down-the-ballot chatter in next month’s Rookie of the Year discussion. I don’t think he will necessarily win it this season, but hey, if he stays healthy and keeps improving the rest of the way, you never know. More fun and history from Cade Horton: Cade Horton since the start of July 6 starts 5 scoreless outings 26 K 1.05 ERA 0.93 WHIP pic.twitter.com/gBRcbpHZxXβ€” Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 6, 2025 "That's top-end stuff. That's quality stuff." Craig Counsell on Cade Horton throwing 56 of his 67 pitches for strikes. pic.twitter.com/jX1DzjQybFβ€” Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 6, 2025 "He's special … His poise, his competitive fire is really awesome." Cade Horton has thrown 4 straight scoreless starts. pic.twitter.com/DkE1Gmq3OVβ€” Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 6, 2025 β€œWe want a healthy Cade Horton, a strong Cade Horton for the rest of the season." The 23-year-old knows the Cubs are watching his pitch count, so he has become 'fearless in the strike zone' + focused on effiiency. The strategy has, well, worked: https://t.co/OFgLFYU8GAβ€” Scott Bair (@ScottBairNFL) August 6, 2025

In five games against Andrew Abbott, tomorrow's starter for the #Reds, the #Cubs are hitting .212, which is roughly equal to an entire team of 2025 Jon Berti's. Or 2010 Koyie Hill's. Or 1988 Doug Dascenzo's.

Color me pessimistic.

Since June 17, the #Cubs have lost more ground to the Brewers (9.5 games) than the Rockies have lost to the Dodgers (6 games). A reflection of both the Brewers’ recent otherworldliness and the Cubs’ mediocrity.
