Just a few hours after celebrating Sal B's birthday, I got the news that Sal has passed away. An enormous loss for our industry and for all of us who knew and worked with him. Safe journeys, Sal. We'll miss you.

Was literally posting his art earlier today! Sal’s style is a huge influence on me, especially his 80s & 90s work on Spectacular Spider-Man. What an incredible artist.

For a different take on the Smiley Face soldiers, check out Michael McLaurin and Dwayne Turner's Cage #2, where an offshoot of The Right known as Hammer is made up explicitly of white supremacists trying to eradicate black culture as Cage tries to bodyguard a west coast rapper.

Nocenti usually gets the nod for being overtly political in her comic book writing, but what Weezy is doing here isn't terribly different, just relying more on stand-ins than explicitly calling out real world events. Hodge in particular is unmasked, saying the quiet parts out loud.

I want to add that of course Weezy was commenting on the 1987 present this was written in. Her characterization of Hodge and "The Right" is very much a critique of Reagan, racist police brutality, the "war on drugs", etc. My reaction comes from seeing it recontextualized with our disturbing present.

I remember initially reading this many years ago thinking it was over the top. Now it's so on the nose it's disturbing.

Doing some Weezy X-Factor reading for the next episode and it's wild reading about The Right in their silly military cosplay abducting mutants in service of their uber-wealthy racist leader, complete with the media counter-narrative.
