The older I get, the more I realize I'm not Luke or Han

I'm the Rebel nerd who stared at a holo of the Death Star plans for 36 hours straight, fueled only by space coffee and spite, and ran simulations until I said HUH WONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE SHOT A BOMB DOWN THIS HOLE

my body feels like a hollow shell that once contained vibrant hope but now lays desolate and void of the spark that visions of a bountiful and idyllic future once blossomed from. Naught remains. Anyway here is a fox to cheer everyone up. I love you all

The Republican Party is going to burn a bunch of political capital trying to pass federal election reform that lots of conservatives are going to hate and itโ€™s just going to make the process more bureaucratic and stodgy if they manage to pass itโ€ฆall because their guy canโ€™t admit he lost in 2020.

Contact Us | The White House Contact the President, Vice President, get help with a Federal Agency, or request a Presidential Greeting.

I urge everyone that sees this, if they haven't already, to use the below website. To send a message to President Biden requesting a recount. There are so many people at stake here.

Just got a library card from my local branch, and highly recommend you do the same if you don't have one. You can watch movies, read ebooks, do research, and use equipment that you would have to pay for anywhere else. In case you need a reminder!

randomly thinking about the shinzo abe assassination, that guy hated him so much he basically created a unique one use only weapon to kill him; that's the kind of shit that only happens in epic mythology and for final bosses

I expected to wake up exhausted, despondent. but I looked up and for the first time in my life I thought, "there's no one left to look to. it's just us."

so I am shocked at how I feel: furious, clear-eyed, galvanized. we who saw this from the beginning, for better or worse, it's our time to lead.

Hello,
Itโ€™s a special edition of Weโ€™re Here. Iโ€™m trying to get my head on straight right now, which Iโ€™m sure is the case for you. I remember realizing after the assassination attempt that there was a rationality to my scrollingโ€ฆI felt like my picture of the future was no longer relevant, and I desperately wanted to have my new one put in place.
Of course, scrolling in the hours after a big event doesnโ€™t tend to provide that relief, but it makes sense that I wouldnโ€™t know what else to do.
Today, I see people scrolling for similar reasons. Those of us who did not want a second Trump term (itโ€™s a very large majority, but if thatโ€™s not you, Iโ€™m still glad you like the newsletter) are trying to figure out a bunch of things at the same time:
How exactly did this happen?
Who should we blame? (whether voters or strategy or candidate or party)
What do we do now?
I am not a political scientist, so I cannot answer those first two questions for you. Iโ€™m sure there will be plenty of interesting analysis coming out of all of the people who think about this stuff for a living and we will never know exactly who was right.
But I do have a couple of suggestions for the third thing.
First, Iโ€™d ask that we all accept that it is normal to mourn an imagined future. I have had this feeling many times in my life, and it is never nice. So, grieve. That is human.
Second, do things. I donโ€™t know what those things are, but do things. This morning Katherine said to me, โ€œThe trees and the sky and the squirrels and the stars just go on, and thatโ€™s what weโ€™ll do.โ€ This reminded me of this bit of an essay on living under the shadow of nuclear war written by C.S. Lewis:
โ€œIf we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of dartsโ€”not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking abouโ€ฆ

The arc of history is long and it bends off to the side a bit, itโ€™s always been like that and history would prefer you not mention it because it makes them a bit self-conscious.

When someone says โ€œthe president is not a dictatorโ€ and you say โ€œmaybe soon thoughโ€ I worry that thatโ€™s a akin to โ€œobeying in advance.โ€

No. The president of the US is not a dictator. Even if he would like to be, we will not allow it.

My phone just auto corrected "trauma dumping" to "trauma dumpling," so I painted this in case anyone would like a visual of my mental state.

How's everyone else doing?

America has failed not just their womenโ€” even their children, their sons, Their PEOPLEโ€” but has failed the world. They failed humanity by not just letting a fraud, a rapist, a convicted CRIMINAL, run for presidency, but allowing him to win. /4
