‘No blame, no shame’: Experts urge culture shift to reduce hospital harm A new report shows preventable harm continues to be a significant issue in Canadian hospitals, affecting thousands of patients and adding pressure to the health-care system.

“1 in 17 acute-care hospital stays involved at least one harmful event. In 1/4 of those cases, patients experienced more than one.”

This is why disabled patients say no one should be alone in hospital.

Everyone needs an advocate.

Most of us have experienced tremendous harm:

The first part of 10. The first panel is of Gortash holding a stone sword from Minecraft, the sword as pixelated as in the game. Gortash is playing Minecraft, with his username floating above his head which says “ENVER_GORTASH” in all caps. The background is a screenshot from a place in a Minecraft world for the realm he’s playing in. Gortash’s expression is an almost sly smirk as he says “A proper base here would be nice…” The Second panel below has Gortash looking pleasantly surprised, looking up at the text that popped up above saying “Th3DarkUrg3 joined the game” like it would in game. Durge swapped the e’s in his name into 3’s, either to be cool or because his darn name was taken. Behind Gortash we see Durge pop into the world, looking a little disoriented or confused as he’d never played Minecraft before.

A silly comic of the Chosen playing Minecraft.. [1/10] 😂

A drawing of the Dark Urge in his Slayer form and Gortash with a white background. The Slayer form is much taller than usual, while Gortash remains the same height. The Slayer form is sitting on the floor, a shadow cast beneath it as it holds its tail with one hand, another resting on its lap and leg, and the last hand is spread under Gortash just in case he falls so Durge can catch him. Gortash is swinging himself in the air while holding onto the Slayer form’s tusks, having silly fun from doing so and saying “weee!!”. The Slayer’s tail is wagging, Durge feeling very happy that Gortash is having fun as they hang out.

(1/2) The Slayer form but much bigger, and Gortash is having a lot of fun lmao 😂

A painted fan poster of the Dark Urge from Baldur's Gate 3. The poster features the major villains: Kethric, Orin and Gortash are positioned as a trio at the top. Beneath them, the eyes of the Emperor shine through. On the front left-side, Sceleritas is positioned with steepled fingers. Raphael is positioned on the right, his leathery wing a doorway into a bright orange scene - there the Dark Urge (white dragonborn) stands, their back turned towards the viewer. They look ahead, where the companions are hovering in the air, frozen in poses of agony, as if they are falling somewhere. Throughout the entire piece, a few tentacles are fading into the background.

Say it a lot. The vast majority of Disabled people who pay attention do not give a fuck about "Disability fakers".

For so many reasons.

A drawing of the Dark Urge and Gortash in Cania, making their way over a bridge covered in ice and snow. It's freezing cold and snowing, spiky glaciers and mountains in the background.
Gortash is carrying the Dark Urge at his front, the Dark Urge clinging to him in a scared fashion, but trusts Gortash to get him over safely. The Dark Urge says "Don't you dare slip, it's a long drop..." while Gortash responds with "my boots won't allow me to," reassuring his ally.
They're both wearing clothes fit for the freezing weather, all of it magically enchanted to keep them warm. The Dark Urge's clothing is all reds, while Gortash's is black and gold, with references to his original outfit to better identify him as his back is turned, only the Dark Urge's face being visible.

I drew a scene from my fanfic! It's pre-relationship, the title is "Heavy Lifting" 😌💖

The image features a solid deep blue background. At the top is a white emblem consisting of a circular outline containing a map of the world surrounded by olive branches, the United Nations logo. Below the logo, centered text in white font reads: Canada has many obligations to disabled people in Canada and around the world it is failing to fulfill. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Review on Canada is happening in Geneva now. DJNO and many groups have endorsed submissions to highlight these issues to the United Nations and challenge Canada’s record on disability. See djno.ca/international-work for some key submissions." On the same blue background, a circular version of the Palestinian flag with the title in white next to it: Canadian International Violations Submission. Below, centered text in white font reads: "This submission illustrates how Canada's persistent shortcomings in this regard negatively impact people with disabilities abroad. Specifically, Canada’s failure to adequately regulate the arms exports that help enable Israel’s atrocities in Gaza contributes to serious violations of the rights of people with disabilities. … Partially discontinuing direct arms exports to Israel, while continuing to allow exports to Israel’s primary arms supplier free of any oversight or control, is inadequate to discharge Canada's obligations under the CRPD. As a group of UN experts, including various Special Rapporteurs, Independent Experts and UN Working Groups, emphasized in a statement of 20 June 2024, the obligation to cease military exports to Israel extends to “indirect transfers through intermediary countries that could ultimately be used by Israeli forces, particularly in the ongoing attacks on Gaza.” On the same blue background, a circular version of the Palestinian flag with the title in white next to it: National Disability Org. Submission. Below, centered text in white font reads: Our Report provides a response to most articles of the CRPD within the context of the List of Issues for Canada, Canada’s Report, and the 2017 Concluding Observations on the initial report of Canada. Our Report highlights key concerns of disability communities. Through community discussions, the following five areas were identified as prevalent needs shared throughout this Report:
Need to abolish harmful policies and laws that violate the CRPD, including: institutionalization, seclusion, segregation, restraints, forced treatment, and Track 2 MAiD for people with disabilities who are not dying;
Need to increase individualized funding and availability of services and supports to ensure that people with disabilities can live with dignity and independence in communities of their choice;
Need for all levels of government (federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal) to increase and coordinate their measures to implement CRPD rights;
Need for more meaningful involvement and participation of diverse disability communities and organizations of persons with disabilities in the development of disability-related laws, policies, programs and services; and
Need to collect and disaggregate data on a variety of disability rights issues, and make the data publicly available. On the same blue background, Logo for National Housing and Homelessness Network followed by white text.

”Systemic gaps and ableist policies in housing create an array of vulnerabilities for individuals living with disabilities. Particularly, women and gender-diverse people with disabilities, are multiply marginalized when trying to access safe, affordable housing that meets their unique needs. Inadequate income and supports systems, gaps in policies, and inconsistencies across jurisdictions are creating egregious violations to the rights of people with disabilities, disproportionately impacting women and gender diverse people. Our submission highlights key areas of disparities and outlines recommendations.”

Friends, the UN is taking a look at Canada's record on disability rights internationally & nationally—from Canada's Arms Sales to Israel, seclusion in school, chasms in accessible housing, & MAiD targeting us all. Check out some of the submissions: djno.ca/international-work

Gisele Pelicot, Medical Misogyny and How Disabled People Face Increased Risk of Abuse Most of us have heard Gisele's story. It's a reminder that even men you trust can harm you. Did you know that she went to her doctors for help? A look at how medical misogyny contributed to her abuse.

This International Women’s Day I’m saying Merci Gisele. Her unwavering commitment to ensuring rape & abuse victims know that the shame is NOT theirs has inspired countless women to come forward & share their own stories.

Abuse, neglect & medical misogyny are serious issues we must address #IWD2025

This International Women’s Day, remember that women are disproportionately impacted by many chronic illnesses. We’re more likely to be abandoned by our spouse/partner when we become disabled, and mistreated/gaslit by the medical profession

Women’s rights & disability rights are uniquely intertwined

I don’t think I’ve ever answered why I love Gortash so much and how I’ve been obsessed with him for over a year now since release day so I’ll answer it before class lol

People with disabilities can believe it. We’ve been told we’re expendable for 5 years

It’s awful that funding has been cut to services like one that would help an 86 year old get to dialysis… but it’s not surprising.

We need folks to listen to us and engage in disability justice. Wear a mask too!
