I love Wodehouse, and if you haven't listened to them, I suggest some of the great audiobook versions of Wodehouse. They make the wit even sharper.

Yesterday Bag of Bones Press accepted my short story "The Man With the Face Tattoo" for their Patterns anthology. (As the titles of the story and name of the publisher may suggest, it is dark fiction/horror.)

Oh, the same company has a lecture series on the Negro Leagues. One of those lectures covers post-Emancipation ball, when the play was relatively integrated. (Not prejudice free, but with some mixed play.)

If your public library has Kanopy, there's a lecture series by the Great Courses company called Play Ball! It's on the history of baseball. One lecture is titled "Black Baseball Before the Negro Leagues."

The Frederick Douglass Family, Pioneers in Civil Rights and Baseball the Douglass' family having been involved in the game as early as 1867 may be considered pioneers in America’s favorite pastime as well as civil rights.

And you're right, though: baseball is interwoven with civil rights. Douglass's son often played against Octavius Catto's team. (Oh, I don't know of any pictures of the ball teams, but here's a newspaper account:

You probably know this, but just in case, Frederick Douglass's son played on some early pro teams, and Douglass was an honorary member of the Mutual Base Ball Club.
