most media is framing this as a revenue/budget thing. mistake! metered/paid parking makes parking and driving better for drivers. you could set the money on fire and there would still benefits. focus on that. being able to invest it elsewhere is a bonus.
Yes, NYC should charge more for currently metered spaces and increase the amount of metered spaces while also thinking twice about charging for parking overall. As @saraklind.bsky.social notes, It could lock in using curbside space for car storage and create even more driver entitlement.
🚨 Sending out a call for help. Do you like outdoor dining? Want it year-round? There's still time to testify in support at today's City Council hearing. The anti-outdoor dining cranks are out in full force.

Five ✨Low Traffic Neighborhoods✨ in each borough by 2023 would limit cars using local streets as shortcuts, and help reach several key goals in the Streets Plan: safer, more accessible streets for pedestrians and cyclists. 🚶🏻♂️🚴🏾♀️
We’re thrilled to hear Commissioner Mike Flynn confirm that @nyc-dot.bsky.social supports Int 655 to make outdoor dining year-round! @cmrestler.bsky.social @speakermenin.bsky.social let’s get this passed asap before the new season begins

TODAY: City Hall Steps at 1:30 pm!
How to incentivize the 34% who drive (and make up 80% of NYC's traffic) to join the 65% who get around car-free?
@openplans.org's @saraklind.bsky.social says "Bus Rapid Transit would be a huge game changer in terms of getting people out of cars," — and we agree! hellgatenyc.com/nyc-is-losin...
Every cyclist in the city should be at tonight's 6 pm rally against NYPD's policy of criminalizing minor traffic infractions — because you could be the next victim of police overreach or lethal force. @kevinduggan.bsky.social has a BLOCKBUSTER story: nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/05/30/c...
Congestion relief works – the data proves it.
The city’s leaders should stand with working New Yorkers and stand up to Washington. We can’t let out-of-touch politicians roll back the progress we’ve made.
This is a great article that lays out some of the solutions to reducing deaths and serious injuries. Part of the solution: just reducing driving overall.
I'm excited to share more soon about the work we're doing at @openplans.org on Low Traffic Neighborhoods and VMT. More to come!
"The faster a car is going, the more likely they are to kill or injure someone, but getting the worst of the worst drivers off the road... is a good policy solution.” - @saraklind.bsky.social

Our co-executive director @saraklind.bsky.social talked with Reddit’s Micromobility NYC about outdoor dining and how the program could be improved. "We told them over and over again that what they were doing was going to ruin the program... and it has." Listen more: www.reddit.com/r/Micromobil...
When I was growing up autistic kids were "hyper" or "had water on the brain" and there was always a raft of "weird kids" who were socially ostracized because they had a hard time people-ing. If you don't think autism existed before it was commonly called "autism," it's because you chose not to see.
Opponents of outdoor dining: it’s a giveaway of public space!
Also opponents of outdoor dining: give me more free parking on public space!!
Sidewalk congestion from sidewalk cafes is real. Here’s a solution: make roadway dining easier and widen sidewalks. Restaurants can flourish and people can walk - that’s much better than parking!
For the record, Council Member Chris Banks just said the words that "we all want safety, but parking is more important."
One of the most shocking things I have read for a while:
t.co/lg46ijHLDF
this is basically just a big plan to impoverish the united states
He’s weakening our country. He’s weakening our economy. He’s weakening our alliances. He’s weakening the free world. He’s weakening our influence around the world.
And Putin keeps smiling every single day.
As a person, I agree, an autism registry is a five alarm fire.
Bike lanes everywhere for safety!! Now!!
