I am not aware of anything specifically applying to those two color/fabric combos. Are both/either mentioned more than once (per book)? No further clues in the text? I gave away all my costume/clothing history books some years ago to niece. 🫤
I believe they were cheaper fabrics - and decidedly ‘unfashionable’. Also would be “easier”* to launder.
