🧬 A gentler way to pump blood for life support!

We report a new approach to blood pumping for ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) that uses magnetic liquid interfaces instead of solid mechanical parts to move blood.

Non-equilibrium autopoietic vesicles driven by intrinsic catalysis Complexity in living organism thrives on emergent functions operating far from equilibrium. Here, we show the spontaneous generation of vesicles via self-assembly of bolaamphiphile building blocks accessed from the condensation of a dipeptide and an ester. These vesicles acquire catalytic capability and establish a chemical reaction network to self-sustain under non-equilibrium conditions. This work can offer significant insights for developing life-inspired materials capable of functioning autonomously.

Glad to be part of this exciting research project. Thanks to @ddaslab.bsky.social @chem @iiserkol
This study shows how simple molecules can create dynamic compartments using feedback-controlled autopoietic behaviour.
Please keep an eye out for more interesting findings from the group!

Life is not based on specific material ingredients since there is a constant turnover of the constituent parts. Rather, it is based on functional behavior. Irrespective of the material composition, if we can replicate the essential functions, we have life!

A picture of Fraser Stoddart on the cover of the order of service at his funeral A picture of part of my eulogy, that reads:

This bloody-mindedness undoubtedly contributed to his incredibly successful career. While those who didn't really know him will measure his contributions through the prizes he won, his real professional legacy is not those prizes, it is the people who passed through his lab and shared in his scientific journey. Yes, he changed science, but he changed lives too - including mine and many of those here today. I learned a lot from Fraser: some chemistry, how to make slides for presentations, how to always include a noun after the word 'this', and a few random Scottish words that I'm still not convinced he didn't just make up.

A long hard day. Some laughs, some tears, some Burns, and lots of stories shared. Plenty of toasts at dinner this evening. Goodbye Fraser, sleep well.
