They have not been able to pass the full approps bill in three years, and whatever they pass needs to be able to get 60 votes in the Senate.

There's a lot of misinfo going around right now that I would be wary of. The GOP has been trying to make it seem like Democrats are shutting down the government over trans healthcare. Neither side's funding proposal does this. Don't do their job for them.

Shutdown update: there are currently two Continuing Resolutions under discussion:
1) The GOP version represents the current status quo
2) The Democratic version represents the pre "Big Ugly Bill" status quo
3) Neither of them contains provisions around trans healthcare

Unpopular opinion but I'd be fine with trans people not being able to buy AR-15s if it meant this nutjob couldn't get one either. Just ban them for everybody.

Here's Michael Knowles a month ago once again calling for the "eradication of transgenderism" and here is a man who threatened to shoot up a gay bar because he wanted to "eradicate transgenderism." This was retweeted by prominent conservatives such as Chris Rufo.

This is stochastic terrorism.

We've all heard the lectures from the Right about how words are inciting violence in this country so maybe they should take their own advice and cool it on the "vengeance for Charlie Kirk" rhetoric

There was nothing to be gained from voting no or not voting. The right is it hing to portray trans people as blood thirsty terrorists, why reinforce that with an ultimately meaningless vote against a national day of remembrance that none of us will remember in 5 years?

It's also just a function of the attention economy, I think - you always have to be escalating the stakes or people tune out

I'm optimistic to a fault, and because government operates at a delay relative to culture, we still have some rough years ahead. But I can't help but note that many of the ~*creators*~ who drove the moral panic seem to be moving on to greener pastures.

Everything is clearer in hindsight but at the moment it seems like the upshot of this moral panic is a regional erosion of sports and healthcare access for trans people at the cost of making every American aware that transitioning is a thing people do.
