Goodbye, sweet boy. You were only a part of our lives for a short time, but you made two lonely travelers into a family, and this misty glacial oasis into our home. A part of my heart will always be running with you under frosty moonlight on the frozen headwaters of the Columbia river.

He showed me that I do not need to be alone or inside to find comfort. He was there through so many changes to my body and my life, for van trips, for backpacking expeditions, for our fairytale wedding.

Ezra got me through a very difficult year in a place far from everything I knew. He taught me not to be afraid to welcome the cold, not to be ashamed to defend my boundaries, not to be embarrassed to ask for love.

This evening, he passed quietly in the warmth of our den.

This morning, he heard my wife crying in the office and came to my bedside with trembling legs and a wagging tail so that together we could brave the stairs and comfort her. This afternoon, we brought him to the mountains to see the snow one final time before the end.

Sixteen days ago, our little man was diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer. It has been horrible watching his body fail so quickly without his personality ever even hinting at fading, the cruelest reminder that nothing in our lives is either fair or promised.

We aren’t doing chemo, the cancer is too advanced unfortunately and they said that would only buy us six months

He’s only five! Cancer sucks 😭

We’re way beyond that unfortunately; yesterday the only thing I got him to eat was baked wild sockeye salmon lol

It used to be cheese wiz but he caught me hiding pills in it one time too many and won’t even look at it now

Today was better day! Finally got him to take all his pills by hiding them in beef teriyaki and he actually developed an appetite by the end of the night 🙂

We are fighting a losing battle, but his personality is still there and he still wants to go on long walks so it’s not time to let go yet

The Democratic Party is far from perfect, but they are the coalition that has invited us in. To lose what we have won inside the Democratic Party would be catastrophic .
