Poor Adric!
Its both Heather and Zypher discovered as chicks in 1981.
From memory there is one that was discovered as a chick in the wild. In about 1980. Would have to look up her name. But she is the oldest bird of known age.
They seem to have quite a bit of trouble with the birds in that mountain sanctuary. Climbing high trees and gliding down over the fences. It seems that a really large buffer is needed from forest to fence.
I seem to recall Andrew Digby saying they did a statically analysis of the hours do smart tags v the death rates and came up with a figure of 80ish years. But a bird like Jean could of been 30 or 40 when first captured.
Yeah. So in two seasons time we should definitely hit that 100 chicks per season mark. They will really have to start selecting new islands for them all.
I am disappointed that Jean has not mated. Im guessing that she has unfortunately become to old.
Its been a fantastic season so far. I was really bummed last Tuesday when I realised we weren't getting a Kakapo files episode. But im hoping for another update on chick numbers in a couple of days. Im very hopeful we will have over 300 birds by the end of the season.
Good to know. Did you glean this from the live feed?
For good?
So is it a radio play based on the book? Or more like and audio reading of the book?
Its a a good look, but they are actually lying, they are cabbage trees.
They arent actually palms. They are called cabbage trees and look very similar to palms but are unrelated and can grow in much cooler climates.
Almost every sci-fi show has a survival episode where almost all memebers have no idea how to cope without the latest technology & one crew member is a fan of old school tech & builds traps for food, figures put which way north is. Makes rope out of vines etc.
#Guineapig time. This is Diego. A 4yo female piggie that had unfortunately lost her cage mate & so came to join our herd so as not to be lonely. She is very food motivated & loves a snack

Drop something YELLOW!
Are you saying stalled labour is not an issue in wild elephants?
Devils advocate, im pretty sure a c-section is not available for wild elephants either.
Bought this last year. A fun read.
Let's meet another #Guineapig this is Biscuit, a 6yo girl. A rescue from a lady that was forced to move himself and couldn't take her 2 piggies with her, so we took them both in.

I like Crichton because he does very near future sci-fi. Using current tech and following them through to logical outcomes. Then adding in the thriller element. And yes, great vibes from vintage Blyton
Another small haul from a charity shop on the other side of town as I happened to be passing by. I love Michael Crichton & this plot seemed interesting. I aslo collect old #EnidBlyton hard covers. Johanna's World seems very intriguing.

How I arrived on Bluesky
Cheers. I totally missed that.
Ah thank you. I totally missed that. I often cut it short once we get into the general housekeeping stuff at the end.
@troyddroyd.bsky.social is there an episode of the kakapo files today? Or did I miss something?
Is there an episode 12 coming out today?
