Thanks for saying this Maia, for I feel it very strongly. The bizarre devaluing of Canadian graduates by the institutions that trained them is nothing new but seems to be soaring to new heights at the moment.

Coming to mind: Andrew Riggsby's Mosaics of Knowledge, an essay by Roy Gibson "Starting with the Index in Pliny" in The Roman Paratext. I have also written an essay "Finding Your Place" on components of cross-referencing technologies in late antique books.

Does it have to be on TOCs per se, or do things like indices and other cross-referencing tables count?
