I don’t have many memories from my early-elementary experience, but this one has always stuck with me!

This specifically all happened during class time - most of the students came from low-income households two towns away, so parents could not pick their kids up from afterschool activities.

We also learned how to say “gung hay fat choy”, and I vaguely remember something about Chinese calligraphy.

We made chopstick holders out of clay that were glazed and fired, she taught us all how to USE CHOPSTICKS, and then she threw a LNY party with Chinese take-out where we got to practice our skills.

Happy LNY! My family doesn’t really observe it, but LNY has always had a special place in my heart, thanks to my 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Snyder. I have no idea how she was able to carve out the time to do a whole unit about LNY for a bunch of white and brown kids, but she did.

Getting ready to release my first curated sashiko hanafukin kits tomorrow! Why tomorrow? Because it’s LNY and one of the designs is Year of the Snake themed!

I’m not a morning person, so I was grumpier than I’d like to be about getting to jury duty by 8:45am, only to stand in a crowded hallway for 50 minutes and then get told that there’s been a delay and to show up again on Wednesday morning. The wheels of justice move slowly.

Of course, I had my 3-in-1 needle puller on hand (one of the 3 things it does is cut threads) so I was still able to do sashiko while waiting 90 minutes for the judge to show up. I’m still sad at the loss of my cutest scissors tho.
