This was what ultimately led to the property and province of the Canal Zone being returned to the sovereignty of Panama. Someone needs to explain to trump the history of how (no, 30k Americans didn’t die building the canal) and why we don’t own it, before he decides to pull a Venezuela there.
January 9 is Martyrs’ day in Panama. It commemorates the day in 1964 that 22 Panamanians we’re killed by American soldiers during riots that occurred because the Americans occupying the Canal Zone refused to follow a law requiring both the US and Panamanian flags to be flown in the Zone.
