“The interview request, sent with the calmness of the underdog, was not answered with the usual refusal (“thank you very much, but due to our client’s busy schedule, he has to say no”), but an invitation for a 15-minute phone interview.” 3/3

“This is also important for our story because the previously inaccessible figure suddenly became accessible. Even for a market as small as Hungary. Something completely unexpected happened.” 2/3

Choice quotes: “At the time of the release of 2017's Wonder Wheel, Allen was still considered a respectable director by the moral standards of American showbiz, but by the time he finished his next film, A Rainy Day in New York, he had been swept away by #metoo.” 1/2

Didn’t mean for us to be THIS Cassandraesque but there we go: Hungarian news site HVG published a series of interviews with WA today, with the fan/journalist marvelling at his luck of getting to interview him four times,*thanks* to WA being “swept away” by MeToo (offering no context or explanation).

‘Artistic genius’: celebrity auteur-directors after #MeToo between Hollywood and Central Eastern Europe An important ramification of the #MeToo movement has been its (re-)invigoration of debates about the cultural positions of arthouse cinema’s ‘problematic’ directors. While a somewhat peripheralised...

How does Hollywood separate the art from the “cancelled” artist after #MeToo and how does it use Eastern Europe for the operation? To find out, read our article co-authored with Anna Mártonfi, in Celebrity Studies. (Link gives free access to the first 50 viewers)

Most people seem to think that "teaching" is the getting up in front of the class and talking part (or maybe any 1-on-1 assistance). Everything else is dismissed as busywork.

But in my 20ish years experience, the stuff highlighted below that you're encouraged to automate is TEACHING.

Farewell to the liberal consensus: the intellectualisation of political projects in Poland and Hungary - European Political Science The article investigates the intellectual foundations of the political projects led by Jarosław Kaczyński and Viktor Orbán. We demonstrate that next to homegrown populist and traditionalist ideas, the...

Great article by @zsolt.bsky.social and B. Stanley. As I've been trying to say also, illiberalism in "Eastern Europe" has never been unrelated to "the West" or "anti-Western." Also because, as Z and S show, the West isn't what it used to be.

In the hope this helps you get out of bed: I set your Mabel Normand chapter as essential reading on my undergrad “Feminism on the Screen” module at the Uni of York. Students love your argument about the Chaplin anecdote & how it points to film authorship as a set of gendered/patriarchal practices.

Right. And this fixing by the AI is reproduced in the way American gatekeepers adjudicate the authenticity and ethics of the mechanically produced sonic foreignness. So in a sense, the from-here critics and the AI perform similar acts of control over the foreign voice.

Disappointing to see Owen Jones invoking spectre of Hungary as what awaits the US. Lazy & entirely false. Orbán isn't the OG, Hungary isn't patient zero. Orbán & his illiberalism were produced in decades-long interactions with, inside, outside & on margins of 'the West' (& the USSR/Russia et al).
