Sometimes, what we perceive as a weakness will actually forge a superpower. I overcame more than many to get here. And that’s exactly what a DEI hire is—someone who has faced greater obstacles and still excelled.

That endurance and resilience now defines me in the OR. I am flexible, adaptable, and calm under pressure. I can pivot seamlessly, navigate complex cases with precision, and maintain full control no matter what’s happening around me.

Over time, I refined my tics, shaping them into controlled, safe movements—until I overcame them entirely. They didn’t make me worse. They made me better. Stronger. Safer. Overcoming them every single day was like running an emotional and mental marathon—again and again.

Go ahead—call me a “DEI hire.”

Growing up with Tourette’s, I often felt like I had no control over my own body. My tics disrupted me, held me back, forced me to adapt. But they also taught me to be creative, to find new pathways when the typical ones failed me. They built resilience.

Maybe you do not know a trans person. Maybe you don’t understand trans people. That does not matter. What is clear is this was never going to stop with trans people.

You likely know and love gay people, immigrants, teachers, federal workers etc.

No one is safe until everyone is safe. By allowing one groups rights to be stripped, we risk losing our own.

Trans communities continue to fight for their own liberation, and the liberation of every single one of us. We are all tied together in this fight.

LGBTQ. It goes back the direction it came. To gay communities.

It does not stop there. It will keep rolling uphill. Reproductive freedom and women’s rights will follow.

It shifted to target the trans and queer community.

10 years later we are seeing the trans community be stripped of rights on all fronts. As the number of fronts left to attack narrows, where does the anti-trans resistance, targeting and energy go?

Gay marriage is being targeted. Lawmakers in 9 states have asked the Supreme Court to reverse its landmark 2015 ruling securing federal protections for gay marriage.

Let’s rewind. In 2015 when gay marriage was won, where do you think all the anti-gay targeting, resistance and energy went?
